Nurserys for Houseplants in Winter

Hi all. I frequent numerous nurserys for outdoor landscape plants on Long Island. Where is one to find nurserys that supply QUALITY houseplants during the winter months? The local nurserys around here close down during the winter months and the only other places are Home Depot and Franks (which is now out of business). Anyone know of any local places on Long Island (Suffolk County)for winter houseplants-good selection and quality? Thanks in advance for any responses! Happy Holidays!

Lee, I have found some nice houseplants (not inexpensive, though) at Hicks Nursery. I think they may be Nassau County. They are located very close to where the Meadowbrook and the Northern State Parkway meet.

Good luck,

Beth

I have heard good things about Hicks-didn't realize they had an indoor plant section. May be worth the trip when I get the January/February doldrums! Thanks!

My favorite, Atlantic Nursery in Freeport.

There's also
Martin Viette Nurseries in East Norwich which is very very nice.

Hicks has the largest selection and many unusual items. They also usually have a grand sale on houseplants in January or February when they are marked down 50%. On new stock. Call ahead to confirm, and visit the spring flower show in March.

Lee, you inspired me, I paid Hicks a visit today.
They're having a 30% off sale on all foliage and flowering plants. They're also having deeper discounts on Christmas ornaments and the like.

I bought three little cactus for a fishbowl-turned-terrarium, an asparagus plumosa, a bag of cactus soil mix, and a bunch of plastic drip trays to replace my old crummy ones.

I also have their "Gardeners Advantage" card so I saved $5.00 at checkout from credits from previous purchases. I like those kinds of surprises.

They have a ton of cyclamen, phalenopsis orchids, cactus, hanging houseplants (pothos, ivy, etc.), gardenias, banana trees, dracena, amaryllis, daffodils, paperwhites... that kind of stuff.

I went at about noon, 1pm and there was no one there. I don't think you have to worry about crowds!

Plantynut, have you been to Atlantic lately? I was going to go there instead of Hicks (I live in Long Beach, so closeby) but I find Hicks has a better houseplant & cactus selection. Just wondering if they had any sales going on too.

Lee,
I see from your Gardenweb page that you are a landscape designer. If you have a tax ID, why not visit Angel Plants in Dix Hills or Otto Keil in Cold Spring Hills. Both have excellent houseplant selections.
Take care,
marg
