Gardening supplies?

Are there any gardening centers in NY that carry all 3 items, or at least 2 of the 3?

NZ Sphagnum Moss
Moss Pole
Cactus & Succulent mix

I'm not sure where to get them. I thought about ordering online, but I'd have to order from different places and the shipping costs really add up. Brooklyn would be my first choice, but I can make a trip to Queens or LI if I can't find anything local. I hope someone can offer some suggestions, thanks.

The moss pole will be the hardest to find --

I'm pretty sure both the Brooklyn Botanical Garden shop and Midtown Nursery (Atlantic Ave. and Flatbush) will carry the other two.

I'd suggest making a few phone calls and checking the larger nurseries in the yellow pages before heading out. I've never seen a moss pole in a big box store, and I doubt most of the employees would know what one was.

You might try Jamali (212-244-4025) on West 28th Street in Manhattan.

Thanks for the suggestions. I figured the moss pole would be harder to find, and of course that's the one I need the most! lol I was just at the BBG's gift shop last week and didn't notice any gardening supplies there, but maybe I just didn't see them. Someone emailed me to recommend the LIC HD (Queens), which is a lot bigger and might carry the other 2 items. I'll be near that area this coming weekend, so I'll check there first.

The problem with looking in the phone book or yellow pages is it goes by street address and I'm not too familiar with Brooklyn. I'm from Queens and won't recognize the streets or know what area it's in! Now if someone says there's one in Park Slope, I'll know what area they're talking about, but not if they just give the street address. I know Queens a lot better than Brooklyn, but it's too far for me to go to every time. So is Park Slope actually. I'd like to find something closer to me, like Marine Park or Midwood area, if that helps.

Dana,

The BBG has two gift shops; one mainly for kids near the magnolia plaza, and the main one in a greenhouse connecting the Palm House to the conservatories -- lotsa plants and supplies in the main shop.

I know there's one or two decent nurseries in the Midwood/Flatbush area, but can't remember the name, have you checked the yellow pages and actually called nurseries to find out where they are?

You could also try visiting a garden supply shop in your neighborhood and see if they'll special order what you need.

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. Jim, yes, I was in the main BBG gift shop. I tried calling a few places, made a few stops in Queens while I was there, no luck. I think the terminal market is only seasonal and might not carry these items now, but I'll probably be going there sometime before the holidays and I'll take a look around or ask while I'm there.

It's been such a hassle trying to track down these items, so for now, I'll just order online from a site that sells 2 of the items, the 3rd can wait till spring I guess.

If you need a good amount of the moss, it's much cheaper bought by mail, even taking shipping into account, and the quality will be better. (I get mine from www.calwesttropical.com/, usually order 2 500g bags at a time. You can expect to pay $7-8 for 200g of so-so moss locally.)

If for the cactus mix you mean the regular commercial stuff, you could check Midtown florist, right next to the Williamsburg Savings Bank building, on Flatbush Extension just past Atlantic as you head downtown. Don't know if I've ever seen a moss pole locally, it's not something I'd pay much attention to, but it's the sort of thing Midtown might get occasionally.

I just needed a small bag of it and ordered the sphag with the moss pole online from Mosser Lee. It wasn't NZ sphag like I wanted, but I got tired of looking for it, so hopefully it's good enough for repotting an orchid.

And yes, I mean the commercial stuff, whatever is pre-mixed and good to plant succulents in as is. I won't actually have any succulents until spring, so I'll hold off till then. I'm sure this will be much easier to find. Thanks for the info!
