Oak trees

Hi, I'm new here but need to know if anyone from Long Island has noticed that there are NO acorns this year. In 30 yrs., I have never had this happen. Just need some reassurance that all my trees are not dying. An elderly neighbor used to tell me that a lot of acorns early, meant a really bad winter. It seemed to ring true but according to that - this winter should hit 100 degrees because I don't have a single acorn.

Hey Debbie

And I thought I was the only one going NUTS. I live in an area right on the border of Queens/Nassau. I am SURROUNDED by MANY large very old OAK tree's which is also the reason why we have an out of control raccoon population. In fact it's nicknamed Oak Grove. I too have noticed that there are no acorns falling. Not one. Every year it's to the point of so many falling that you have trouble walking the sidewalks without twisting an ankle. Not this year. Not one single acorn. I usually have squirrels digging them away in my garden for the winter months. I only wonder what's going to happen now. Mother Natures Population Control?

Thank goodness it's not just my trees!! This is downright eerie. I'm going to post on the 'trees' forum and see if anyone has an explaination. If I get one - I'll post back.

That's a good idea Debbie. I'm curious to see if maybe it's a cycle thing with Oak Tree's. I've always had a battle with the raccoons here ripping up my garden in the spring summer months. By Fall they usually have plenty of acorns to keep them happy and well fed. However each night now they are in my garden digging away. Not that there is much left as far a flowers but they are still making a big mess. One went so far as to pull a plug thing out of my umbrella stand and start scooping the sand out. Maybe it thought there were grubs inside. Who knows. It's just so not like them this time of the year.

Hi, I just heard from the tree forum. Their opinion seems to be that the trees are taking a well earned rest. It seems that this is really not all that uncommon. The last 2 years have produced very heavy crops of acorns here so I hope they are correct. It's just so weird that it has never happened before. I guess we'll just have to wait and see. Bye, Debbie
