Where to get soil for townhouse planters
| | |
Posted by sarakateg z6 ny (My Page) on Mon, Oct 11, 04 at 14:54
I am doing a planting in front of a friend's townhouse and need to fill about 46 cubic feet with potting soil. Dimitri's and Chelsea Garden Ctr are both quite expensive. Does anyone have any suggestions of a place that will deliver but that won't charge the $8/bag+ that Dimitri's and Chelsea are charging? Thank you.

You might try contacting the people in the "Compost" booth at the Union Square Greenmarket. They offer free delivery for quantities of 100 pounds or more and significant discounts, and their soil is of excellent quality. The booth is run by the Lower East Side Ecology Center.

Interesting; I have never noticed this booth at Union square. Are they there year-round?

Yes. They're there every Greenmarket day — Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday — nominally from 8 to 5, and reliably from 9 to 4.
