Good Small Tree for a Brooklyn Backyard?

| We are new Brooklyn home owners looking for a small tree that would be a good fit for a relatively sunny, fenced-in backyard (yard size approximately 15 feet wide and 30 feet deep). There is currently a Hawthorne tree in the backyard, which is exactly the right size but needs to be removed due to its dangerous thorns. We have thought of planting a dogwood but are wondering if that will provide enough privacy. We have also though of a Japanese maple though are concerned it will take several years to provide the same amount of privacy as the Hawthorne tree currently does.
In this garden, we have inherited several old-fashioned perennials like peonies and hydrangeas and then more contemporary selections (like miscanthus grass). So I guess the look is kind of old-fashioned-meets-edgy???
I am a new gardener. Any advice from experienced Brooklynites would be much appreciated!!!! |

My husband and I like the Redbud really pretty flowers fast growing but small.. Google it and see if it fits your backyard. I think dogwoods get diseases, may what to check on that. Lovelycherry |
