New Lowes in Garden City

Hey, I see the new Lowes in Garden City has opened and they are advertising it on TV. I know where it is, near Roosevelt Field. I know there is a Lowes way out on Long Island but I have never made it there.

Lots of people, especially down south, on my butterfly gardening list, get plants at lowes for bargains that beat even Walmart in price.

Anyone gone to the new Lowes and seen any interesting plants? I figgure, its getting kinda late for plants around here!

Rita,
I actually made it to the Lowe's all the way out in Sufolk.
I was very impressed with the store in general but the day I went was one of those 90 degree plus days and just glanced at the plants. There seemed to be a large selection and they looked healthy, didn't get a chance to price them.
I plan to make a trip to the Garden City store soon.

Does anyone know if lowes sells pequa products? Home depot is always sold out every time I go there.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I'm dying to go check the Garden City location out - it's right near mea as I live in Garden City Park. In general is it better than Home DePot?

FYI....there is a Lowes in Jersey that is not ten minutes from the Lincoln or Holland tunnel. Tonnele Ave (Rt. 1-9) and 83rd St. in North Bergen. Been opened about 6 months I think.

Here is a link that might be useful: Lowes Store Locator

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

the garden city lowes gardening section is pretty skimpy
they basically have one small area for indoor stuff
the usual, orchids, alot of ivy, some dieffenbachia, etc
nothing to write home about
If they dont plan to have a bigger section I might just
tolerate the bad service over at Home Depot as they periodically get really good plants.... The trick is to
buy those plants as they come off the truck----!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I keep getting plant at home depo they have very tempting prices
but they are never as good as the plants one gets at the better nurseries
HD is known for getting the stuff growers need to dump
whether it is old stock or plants that for some reason are genetically inferior, under performing or just plants that the growers need to get read of fast.

talk about root bound, stressed or missed named varieties

I blame the growers for that! and you the buyer need to be careful.
Forget the mass markets and support the smaller growers, the specialty vendors
the man and women who really care.
we need the kind of purveyors that go out and find the new, that restore the old and forgotten
and the plantsman/woman that bring us the unusual or we will end up gardening with soy

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Well, the mass markets like HD, Lowes and Walmart often do have really great prices for the same plants offered at the pricey nurseries for much more money.

I bought beautyberry bushes (calicarpa) variety Early Amethyst at HD earlier this summer for (about) $6.00 a plant for beautiful healthy shrubs. They were root bound but thats no big deal just make some cuts in the root ball and since I planted them have taken off and done beautifully.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I expect Lowes to clear out their Garden inventory at 50% off in the next 2-3 weeks to make room for X-mas stuff. If any knows this sale is on, please post immediately!!!!!!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I just found out today that a Lowes is going up near me(about 15 min. away). You all speak so much about the plants there, I can't wait to compair them to HD which is about 1/4 mile up the road across the street. I wonder why they would put the 2 so close togeather when they both offer just about the same stuff?? Oh yeah,, and there is a Walmart there too.

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I've been to the new Lowe's in garden city...we went last week and the pickins were indeed slim.

I was able to get a neat little andromeda for just under 7$ and if you were looking for mums, like any place else, they had more of them than anything else.

They did have some small evergreen shrubs (thus the andromda) but not very many...

I had high hopes for Lowe's but am going to wait to see what their springtime stock looks like...O and their indoor plants, nothing special, 'garden variety'....

I *have* been to the Lowe's in Suffolk near Holtsville where my inlaws live...now *that* place had really healthy looking house plants...the usual outdoor plants but the house plants were very green and lush...of course that was about 2 months ago, but, for what it's worth, that's my story.

I don't rule out shopping at Home Depot or Lowe's for plants, you can't beat the price compared to the 'better' garden centers but you *must* know what you're looking for.

I usually make my big purchases at places like Hicks' and other better garden centers but for run of the mill shrubs and plants for seasonal interest, I shop at the home centers.

Garden World, literally 2 blocks from me is 3 times as expensive for nothing special....I prowl that store more times a week than I care to admit and I leave there empty handed 9 out of 10 times.

I *almost* bought a small over priced jasmine yesterday, it's siren song fragrance almost snared me in it's web...but upon closer examination, the BIG FAT MEALYBUGS brought me to slamming mach one, (top velocity folks) into reality!

grumble...and to think, I almost jeopardized my entire tropical population of indoor plants (numbering over 100) to this pest all for a 6" 14.95 jasmine!

On another note, 4 weeks ago when I went to this very same garden center, I asked a very nice older man if they had cascading mums, his reply?...I've never heard of such a thing....ok, how about miniature mums?...his reply?...well, we have 6" mums and 8" mums over there...ugh...I thanked the man kindly and walked away not only disgusted, but empty handed.

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Hooki,
Is that Garden World in Hempstead, can't remember the name of the street?

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I am not the only on them. I live near the Garden World in Queens and shop (window shop) while my wife shops next door. The prices and quailty just don't compare with other better garden centers. In trhe past few years, I have only bought X-mas trees there and things I really wanted without waiting.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Mmm...it's not on Hempstead Tpk and I feel kinda badly to say where it is exactly...suffice it to say that when you purchase house plants, check *very* carefully for signs of pests and disease...

hookilau - if it's the one on Franklin Ave, in front of the wholesaler nursery - ucky ucky uck! expensive and not the best quality.

I was hoping we'd get a Lowe's in Nassau County! Hope it improves for next year. don't like the depot.

Looking forward to going to Frank's in Setauket next spring. They had some great plants this year, and decent prices.

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Dead on Wkend War....I live a measly couple of blocks from the place and find myself lurking there and if it's bargains yer after...that's not usually where to find it...

Still, I'm savin' my pennies for Hick's (can't wait till Mother's Day!!) in the meantime, I lurk at Frank's, Home Depot and Lowes' and yes, the aforementioned un-named place of business for the odd plant bargain...

I kinda like the treasure hunting!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Are they cheaper than Home Depot?

I went to the new Lowe's with Hubs last week. He needed some electrical stuff and I wanted some potting soil.

Bummout on both counts. The dirt costs more than what you could buy at Walmart for anything comaptible....name brand or otherwise. And Hubs was very disspointed with the pricing in the electical department. They were more expensive than HD for many of the same products. (well....I don't know why we so were dissapointed...afterall, it IS Garden City.)

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Bummer. I never did make it to the Lowes in Garden City this fall but I was so hoping for a decent garden department. Looks like I keep going to Home Depot also. Will just have to break down and go to the Medford Lowes next Spring. I keep reading about the plant bargains others get at their neighborhood Lowes and am envious!!!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Just saw a Lowe's commercial last night that had me looking for this thread today... I guess it's true about the 'truth in advertising!' The Lowe's I've seen are NOT like they purport to be.
boo hiss.
I spend way too much on nursery stuff and was hoping for a local discount retailer. Or at least a good local selection! ssiiiggghhh. Local is not to be, for me. Guess I'll be drivin' around in Spring again!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

HOME DEpot and walmart plants tend to have poor roots. So chances of surviving poorer indoor conditions and slight overwatering are lower!
I saw the corn plants at ikea with barely any roots.
Go figure...

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Wonder when the discounters such as Lowes, Walmart and Home Depot will start with their plants? After the nearly 2 feet of snow we had around here on Monday, it doesn't seem possible that Spring is ever going to be here!!!!!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Went to Home Depot today in the rain. They had all the spring plants out, including annuals that I think its too early to plant.

Anyone check out the Lowes in Medford or Garden City yet for plants?

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I went to the Garden City Lowes today. What a lousey Garden Department. Haveing no garden department would be better than what they had. YUCK!!!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Can anyone suggest another nursery on long island that has great stock and very decent prices? I've got to take my mom out this Thurs. 5/15 to purchase her yearly plantings, and money is tight - yet we don't want to buy junk. I've heard stuff is way cheaper out east - (we're in s.w. nassau county) and I'm willing to take a drive. Thanks!

P.S. - if anyone knows where I can still get 'stock' (smells great-heavy, perfume-y) I'd apprec. hearing that, too.

Hi Ladybug. I go to Hicks nurseries in Westbury on Jericho Tpke. They are very big in size. They're prices are so-so. Sometimes they have sales for "Garden Advantage" members. It costs nothing to join. I was there last weekend, buying flats of impatiens for my wife. Check out their website. www.hicksnursery.com

RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Anyone been to the Medford Lowes lately???

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I went in early June, and was able to get quite a few beautiful perennials in the Garden City Lowe's at terrific prices! Most were $2.99, in 2 gal containers. They are thriving and blooming.....If it's outdoor wicker furniture you want, go to the Lowe's in Medford. Their selection was much larger....worth the trip.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I watch the Lowes comercials on TV all the time and wish the Garden City Lowes was like that. I still haven't been able to get out to the Medford Lowes. I am sure thats the one that has a better Garden Dept.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Anyone checked the seed selections at Lowes and Home Depot? I am getting really antsy for Spring to arrive!!!!!

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Sorry nyrita, haven't been to lowes, but went to HD and Target. Lots of starter foliage in HD and they got the large floor plants as well. Target was very, very yuckey, ecxept for some 4" gardenias, everything else was dead.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I was at HD a few weeks ago to look at orchids and all they had were tulips, hyacinth, african violets, and a lot of dead stuff. I went to the one in Freeport. I don't know why I bother, their stuff is always mistreated.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

The Garden City Lowes garden section is very dissapointing. I was there two days ago getting some lumber so checked out the plants. They do sell single tomato plants in a decient variety for 99 cents or $1.78 for the larger ones. Then they also had nice potted Blueberry shubs for around $12.00 Many had blossoms on them.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I was also at GC Lowes recently, the nursery is awful. Crushed, dry, dead, the only satisfied patrons will be the Munsters, sans Lilly. Hicks is a fortune. Cheap Sam's (exit 62 on LIE) is decent, expensive for perennials but their trees and shrubs are cheap. Careful, their warranty is only 6 months. Pound for pound, HD is best, provided you select well.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Been there at the Garden Center and every time I have been there, there's NEVER ENOUGH CASHIERS!!!! THe folks at Lowe's don'thave as much information like the folks in Home Depot if you hvae questions about a plant. The Home Depot in Syosset doesn't have much of a section of anything but the one in Hempstead Trnpk by the race track has a great selection!! HICKS by Jericho Turnpkie is an awesome place. The folks there are very filled w/ info.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Every time I see that comercial they run on TV about the wonderful Lowes Garden Department and all the helpfull sales staff I almost gag. It certainly isn't true in real life. Of course, the Garden City Lowes is the only one I have ever been to. I hope the Medford Lowes is better (can't be worse for garden stock) but I have never been there.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Was just at Lowe's in GC Saturday; tons of polar pansies and mums. And entire racks of mostly crummy looking plants for $25-30; at abou 50cents a pop, great for you plant rescuers out there :-) Horrible selections of mulch (unless you lilke that dyed red stuff) and NO manure. Got some nice containers, tho.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

The Lowe's in Garden City had 'Red Sentinel' astilbe this summer when all the larger nurseries said they didn't get it in this year from their growers. I bought all my brick for edging borders there over the past 2 years since it opened. The bricks were cheaper than they were priced at Home Depot.

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

Just as a followup, the plants I bought died almost immediately :-(

 o
RE: New Lowes in Garden City

I don't buy much there plantwise but I buy lots of Plants at Home Depot.
