RE: Figs

i just rec'd one from mail-order. i'm planning to have it indoors during the winter. I might put it outside for summer, but in a pot, not in the ground.

when i lived on a boat, i had a small fig in a pot. never took it in, gave fruit each summer, and survived each year uncovered in manhattan.

My fig tree is about five years old, began producing heavily in year three. It's a dark, Turkish variety that grows in full sun and produces heavily around late September. I try to maintain about 12-inches of mulch in an 18-inch diameter from the base. Naturally I prune it back severely every Spring. It is never covered. Good luck with your figs; they are DELICIOUS. I enjoy them, better than plums and fun to pick and eat.

Hi All,
I grow many Fig trees in Long Island.Every winter I wrap them in a cylinder of carpet and fill the inside with pine needles. I then cover it with a tarp.
Last season each trees produced over 100 figs.
