New NYC Container Gardener - Greenhouse Advice?
| | |
Posted by RDogg Was Z10 Miami (My Page) on Sun, Sep 11, 05 at 11:39
| I recently moved to a NYC apt with a *huge* outdoor deck that currently receives about 3/4 solid hours of direct sunlight through the midday. Along with me came a host of Z10 tropicals, a 6' bamboo and small Forida natives, all in containers.
My garden is doing quite well following the move, I note great deal of new growth even in the past week! But as the temperature begins to drop, I am increasingly nervous (and cold! My blood is still SFL thin!). The plan for the moment is to bring the jungle inside for the winter, but I wonder if small outdoor greenhouse might be a better solution.
Does anyone have any advice re. a greenhouse in a City apt context? Or any other overwintering advice for a gardener not so used to winter?
Thank you in advance. |

ALOHA RDogg.. Welcome to the joys of gardening in the city... I assume you are saying 3 to 4 hours of sun... bot blessed with 3/4 hours or 45 minutes of sun .. Can yo u build the greenhouse off the window or door of your apartment... you can keep the door open to provide some heat... but perhaps a heater should be factored in a greenhousewwould free up the inside space... and provide more light than inside aganst a window..with supplemental light... I grow alot of Z 9 plants... plenty of plumeria... and brugmancias... by the score... inside is lovely all planted out ... but other family members often have a diffrent otlook.. don't look to us first... but your living mates.. Will you want to dismantle the greenhouse next summer... but get started right away... fall has a way of comming faster than you imagine.. Gordon |

| An indoor setup might be easier. That way you only have to provide lighting and air movement. An outdoors structure will need both, plus some system to moderate heat/moisture. Also, you may want to take down the greenhouse so you can enjoy your outdoor space in the summer -- so you need storage space, too. With a table, some shop lights with high spectrum bulbs, and an electric fan you should be able to set up a decent indoor environment for your tender plants. Plan on sheltering them inside from mid-October to late April in this area. |

| I'm late to this discussion, but just found this forum. Too bad it's not more active. RDogg, NYC regulations are pretty strict. If you decide to get a greenhouse, you must get approval from your landlord. We had that issue here - the tenants garden on a portion of the roofdeck - and found out the building would need an additional permit to put in ANY type of installation like a greenhouse. The city rejected the application. |

Many moons later... I thank you, all, for the advice. The garden came inside this winter, and our little jungle home kept our focus off the cold months. We lost the bamboo and the sweet potato vine, but the rest of us survived (incl poor hubbie and his run-ins with the bougainvillea). I wonder if I should have considered a outdoor storage shed (I've seen them at HD I think Rubbermaid) -- substantially cheaper than a greenhouse, legal (thanks, heathentart), and I could have let my plants "sleep" the winter away... though tropicals may not need the rest. But I have many months to figure THAT one out! |
