tree advice needed!

Hi,

I just got back from 2 months out of the city, to find my dogwood sprung about 4 feet of new horizontal growth! On one side! It's a jungle here in Brooklyn.
I think it needs some serious pruning, and I know it's late in the season. Can anyone recommend an expert to come advise? This tree was ailing for a year, is now thriving but I fear the weight of the growth will pull it over this winter.

Thanks!

RE: tree advice needed!

Hello,
You can prune any time... the only loss is that you may cut off buds for spring bloom and the new cuts will probably not grow buds quickly enough for next year. The best time to prune is spring right after bloom, but you can still prune now ... you just loose the blooms but maybe save the tree if you think it will fall over.
The other possibility is to support and anchor the tree for winter and cut the branches after the bloom.
You want to prune now before October's chill sets in.
There are a lot of good websites about puning. A simple google search may get you there.
