when we have a heat wave, should I water MORE?

| I normally water my outdoor, potted plants more in the Summer anyway, but with this heat wave, I've noticed the plants seems alot more "droopy". Will even more watering help to counteract the droopiness, or is it simply a result of the high temps and humidity, and no more watering will make a difference, and it could actually cause more harm from TOO much water?

Yips :) all my potted plants I water around 8:30pm every single day. if I miss a day they droop. but once I water - they perk up in a couple hours. water evening and early morn. I also water the garden every evening too. unless it rains.-of course.

It's pretty hard to over-water a potted plant in this heat as long as the drainage is good. Except for geraniums. They prefer dry soil.

Recent studies have shown that the best time of day to water container plants is around 2-3:00pm. The studies I read had not yet determined the reasons why, but the plants were deemed to be considerably healthier than containers watered at other times of the day/night. I don't recall where I read about these studies (sometime within the past 2 years).

Suggestion, some flowering plants will droop a bit when the temperatures are very high. My soil is rich and well mulched so I water deeply twice a week. During a heat wave I add one or two addtional waterings each week. That seems to help. You may want to ensure that you have at least four inches of mulch to maximize the effectiveness of your watering schedule. Good luck.

With potted plants, the way I tell whether they are just drooping from the heat or in need of watering is by becoming familiar with the feel of the weight of the pot (I just tip it with my foot) right after it has been watered (heavy) and when the soil/potting mix is dry (light). In this heat, most of my container plants need to be watered daily and some that are under-potted need watering more than once a day. It helps somewhat to use some sort of mulch in the pot.
