Installing Outdoor Spigot - Ideas, cost, references?

Posted by SYellin Z6 NY, NY (My Page) on

I have a nice deck off of my apartment, but I have no outdoor water source. As a result, I don't have nearly as many containers as I'd like, as I can only lug a watering can in and out of the apartment so many times each evening. I would love to have a outdoor spigot for a drip system. Any ideas on how difficult it is to have a spigot installed outside? How much would it cost to hire a plumber to do the work? Any good references?

It really depends on where there is a water line to tap into. Is your kitchen or bathroom on an outside wall or close-by the deck? That would make it easier. It's a pretty easy job. If you wanted to, a decent handyman could do something like this for less than a plumber. Ask around the neighborhood or look on phone poles.

In the time being, if you're in a hurry, Lowes and Home Depot have the connectors to hook up a hose to a kitchen sink. But I guess I wouldn't want a hose running through my kitchen unless the sink were by a window leading out onto the deck.

Also, check to make sure you don't have a dishwasher hookup. (I did, so I just ran a line from that to the deck - I have the valve inside where the dishwasher hookup is, and I put a valves and a "Y" on the outside too.)

Good luck - it IS liberating, being able to run sprinklers and timers and everything! Really made me able to have all the plants I want.

Unfortunately, the deck is not adjacent to the kitchen or the bathroom, so I'd need a plumber (or handyman) to run a line from some other source. I'm hoping there's a straightforward way to get it done. Thanks for the input.

There are adapters that allow you to attach an ordinary hose to your kitchen or bathroom faucet. I used one when "fire-escape gardening" in NYC. The hose can be attached when you water, then taken off and coiled up when not needed. You'll want to empty it, though, or you'll end up with a puddle on the floor. It's easy, cheap and it works!

Best,
Jen

SYellen...
Well perhaps I can help... at least look at it for you... and tell you your options for getting water to your deck.. and getting going on a drip system..
Where are you and your deck located...
I'm in Brooklyn... with my roof garden.. and take care of home issues for folks and friends.. no charge to scope it out for you... at least then you'll know your options...
I guess try and write me directly if you're interested.. Many think drip irrigation has done more to change thier lives.. than anything..
Sorry htese are last years photos... the ones from this year I haven't put on the site as of now.. and if you click on the upper left of the page where it says return to other albums or something like that... there's lot more pictures of the place.. All the best ... Gordon
