Best Time to start on LI

| Hi all. I'm new to these forums and to gardening in general. I have done little bits here and there but never really felt I had the time for it. But I want to start out and start right. I'm on Long Island and bought a house in Islip. The front of the house has some over grown azealea (sp?) bushes and some other standard LI shrubs that I'd like to pull out and start fresh. When I do this I will have a nice size planting bed to fill.
Couple questions.
First when should I start this? Am I better off pulling everything now, Fall, or waiting for Spring?
Second, Once it's cleared do I need to wait to plant or can I go right back in?
Finally, is there a resource someone could point me too for the types of plants that would thrive in our climate? I'd hate for some college kid at 'the Depot' to send me home with a few hundred dollars worth of plants that won't make the winter here.
Sorry for the huge post, I'm just eager to get started but don't want to frustrate myself with bad results because of a lack of knowledge.
Thanks in advance, Mikey |

Hey Mikey, Congratulations on the buying of your home. What I would do and I am a fellow Long Islander, formally from Islip township, now living in Brookhaven is pull what you want up in the early fall. Prepare the bed with lots of compost, (visit the soil and compost forum if you don't know what I'm talking about)and allow that to overwinter. Come spring, your pick of plants is many. There are many nurseries here on Long Island, Father Nature on Sunrise Highway comes to mind and its in your area too. Since Azalea's have been growing on the spot, in all likelyhood its a very acid soil and will have to be sweetened up by some Lime, which should be put down early fall to see results in Spring. You can also email me here through the gardenweb forums by clicking on my name and I'll try to help you out more. Alberta |
