Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I've noticed I see hummingbird supplies for sale all over the place, but I've yet to find anyone who says "Yes, I have hummers in my yard" (if you listen to Opie & Anthony, don't think I don't hear you laughing! But hummingbirds is just too long to keep typing over & over...)
I'm in Levittown, just about smack in the middle of the Island. Can anyone tell me if there's any point in trying to attract, umm, Hummingbirds? Any info appreciated...
Thanks -

| I've lived on LI my entire, rather lenghthy life and last summer was the first time I ever saw a hummingbird. He was kind enough to visit my backyard, albeit very briefly. So they do exist here and I would guess if you provide the proper habitat they will find you. Good luck. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I agree with Bandy, last year I caught a quick look at a hummer, if you blink you would have missed it. I live in Bellmore. A friend who lives about a mile away says she sees them all the time in her Trumpet Vine, so who knows. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I believe we only have the ruby throated hummer here. I get them a few times a day when I have fuchsia plants hanging. I'd rather get them with flowers than those feeders...too hard to clean & manage. |

| Okay, great! There's hope, then. I just always had a feeling we (anybody west of "rural" Suffolk, at least) were just too industrialized for hummers to bother with... I agree, Nature Girl, I'd much rather lure them with real live flowers. For one thing, the feeders don't grow *nearly* fast enough to cover an arbor!! Thanks, folks. You've given me something to strive for... |

| The Brooklyn Botanical Gardens has a hummingbird trail. I have even spotted one or two birds in my backyard, less than 1/2 mile from BBG. So, I guess there is a chance even for us urbanites. Good luck! |

| Last year I saw 1 in my garden (a ruby throated). He hung around a hanging basket of petunia's. This year I bought a hummingbird feeder and have been filling it every other day with fresh instant nectar. I have not seen 1 so far but I keep trying. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| Yes, I'm out east and have them. They like my wave petunias in hanging baskets. |

| A hummingbird visited me while I was fine spraying some plants. It flew in an out of the mist and landed on a branch nearby and flew in again. I have never seen one land and sit still. I was thrilled. Needless to say I kept the misting going for longer than I would have. Then I never saw it again! Lynne |

| KarinH, I grew up in Levittown, a block away from the East Village Green and never saw one either. My first hummingbird sighting was in Glen Spey NY, upstate... And yes, I used to listen to O&A also, thanks for reminding me lol Good luck with it! |

Hey, Greenfreak! The East Green, that's the one on Jerusalem, right? I always lose track of which is East, West, North, & I don't think there's even a South Village Green. If there is, it's in Stealth Mode... If that's the one, that's just about where I live. Other side of Jerusalem, off Blacksmith. Anyway, if they have (ahem) Hummers upstate, where do they get off not coming here?? We do have falcons now, though! A family of peregrines has been nesting in the Medical Center for a few years now. Hey... maybe that's where all the hummingbirds went... eeew. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I read a lot about them, and found one little notation on habitat, they like lots of it. I would think it is for protection as well as food. If your near a preserve there is hope. Also, they LIKE MIST, one person posted her experience(Lynne?). They will not ordinarilly use a bird bath. If you have a shade tree with a low enough bough , hang an umbrella mister around off it, and have feed near it. They like to fly in and out of the mist to cool off in summer. I am in wunderful wantagh, so I am in middle of area that apparently has them. My wife's wild flowers have brought us a good number of dragon flies, and next year we are going for hummers and butterflies. Please see my post begging for pieces of Willow tree(pussy willow) and catalpa trees . have a great day chris |

| I am up state NY in the country and I see them all the time threw out the summer. Just this morning there was a Hummer at my Tiger Lillies that are in full bloom now. I also have 3 hummingbird feeders in different parts of my yard near my flower beds.I did not know they like a mist of water instead of the bird bath. I will have to try and rig something up for them and see if they use it. Valerie |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Hi Val, I bought my misters at Genovese Drug last year on clearence, they run 12 bucks or so , I paid 3.75. I have yet to use them, they are to drape around a place we people sit and connect to a hose. Saw a "mist tent" in either Six Flags or Canobie Lake (in New Hampshre). I was awed how it cooled you off , no wonder hummers love it! Maybe you buy this year for next year? chris |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Thanks for the tip Chris...I'll be looking for them. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I know that they are at least sometimes here. This April during the spring migration, I had my feeders out early and did get afew visitors. But then nothing. My yard is heavily planted with hummer magnet types of plants and I have two feeders out constantly awaiting customers. Last week I saw a hummer in my garden after I returned home, being out all day and today saw one late afternoon feeding at various hummer flowers. It just ignorned the feeders. Trouble is they don't seem to sick around. Very frustrating!!! I am on the north shore in Nassau County. I can see LI Sound from my front window (actually I can see Hempsted Bay). |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Chris,, thanks for the info on the misters,,, now that you mentioned it I remember seeing them at outdoor cafes to keep you cool. I also think I saw them at the Bronx Zoo. I think I will get them to hang around my deck. Then I and the Hummers can stay cool. Valerie |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Newyorkrita, I thought Hemp. Bay was on the south shore? |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Sorry, typo. Should have said Hempstead Harbor. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Hey Valley Girl, Those misters are the ones to buy. If I see them at Geno this week or next I will post here. I was thinking you could make a big halo with the tubing and a small resevoir with a battery operated pump. When you use it in full sun you will get 1) cooler 2) have a Halo 3) the mist will make RAINBOWS 4) you will be chased by Hummers, AND little kids either thinking you are an angel or wanting to get yer Pot'o Gold. chuckle chris |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| LOL Chris! I'll check Geno this week too. :o) |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Chris,,I do not have a Geno up here where I live. What kind a store is it? You think HD would have them? Your idea sounds good,, sure do wish there was a pot of gold at the end of the rainbow..... Valerie |

| Has anyone seen Hummingbirds around Nassau county? |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
Pete, You have to look quick because thats how fast they move, sometimes you think you are looking at a large butterfly and it turns out to be a hummingbird. I am hoping this year because my Trumpet vine is finally blooming that I will attract a couple of hummers. I think they are attracted to red and orange flowers. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Yes there are Hummingbirds here in Nassau County but it seems like one has to work very hard to get their attention. Last year I had a feeder out all year but not so many flowers and didn't have them. This year I added lots more hummer attracting plants and have a female hanging around all day that only appeared two weeks ago. Plants that are blooming in my garden now to attract hummingbirds include: Bee Balm Salvia Indigo Spires Trumpet Honeysuckle Mexican Sunflower Butterfly Bush (5) White Swamp Milkweed Columbine Agastache Hummingbird Mint (5 varieties) Zinnias Abelia shrub Hummingbird and Red Sweet pepper or summersweet bushes Morning Glory African Morning Glory vine Tropical red flowered Mandavilla vine Cypress Vine Cardinal climber vine Pentas lantana Lady in Red Salvia Common bedding Salvia Annual blue salvia Salvia Greggi- 2 species Scarlet Hedgnettle Mexican Cigars Heliotrope Flowering Tobacco Hairy Vetch Four O'Clocks Petunias mini petunias million bells trumpet flowering fuchsia common fuchsia nasturtium verbena cannas Trumpet Vine penstemmons impatients Zauschneria Rose of Sharon Scarlett Runner Beans They are attracted to orange and red flowers but also tube shaped flowers and other colors. I took my feeder down weeks ago as I figgured if they did not go for all these flowers, they would not go for the feeder. Before she appeared I had seen afew stop at my feeder during the spring migration and nothing since then. |

| You have a lot of flowers Rita. They must look very nice. I did see various feeders at Hicks Nurseries yesterday and I was considering buying one in addition to the Hummingbird feed that they sold. However I wasnt sure if we had these birds here and didnt want to spend the money. I did see bat houses there too, however where on earth would you find bats in Long Island? |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| hey PeteM yes, read the above posts, in Bellmore, and on North Shore. The closer you are to a preserve the better your chances of getting hummers. Also Geno's is Genovese Drug Store, Taken over by Eckerts. They may no longer have them, I got mine last year on clearence. If no luck try Kmart, or Walmart. chris |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Make sure you get a hummer feeder that is easily cleaned. Some of them are impossible to get a brush around in. Don't waste your money on the hummer mix. Home made is actually better. 1 part sugar to 4 parts water. Boil for 2 minutes and cool. Thats it. Of course in this heat, you have to put fresh mix in every two days and wash the feeders well as otherwise a toxic mold grows that can kill the little guys. |

| Do you add any coloring to the mix, or do the birds get fooled because most feeders are pink or purple in color? |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| No, no, no. Never add color. The Hummer feeders always are red. The hummers can see the feeders just fine the way they are. The hummermixes sold in the stores are just something marketing departments thought up. Given a choice of two feeders side by side, one with sugar water and one with store mix, the hummers always prefer the sugar water. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

I have been following this thread from the start. Humming birds rarely nest on L I . We only get them in the spring and fall migrations . Yes I have had them all summer long ,but again they rarely nest here . The migration is on ,I just spent some time at a friend of mine who lives in East Marion on the north fork . He has at least 4 feeders [ I don't beleive they are good for the birds ] While we sat there for the last two hours. I saw no less thn four birds . There was two males ,one immature male and a female they must have made at least 15 visits while I was there, I don't believe in feeders after talking to a man that had a hummingbird garden off of Rt, 9 just north of Cape May, he used only flowers ,and I must have seen over 25 in late Aug. at the end of their migration. They are the most antisocial bird . They only get along during those few minutes that are needed every spring to continue the species |

| KarinH... Yes, you're right-the East Village Green is the one on Jerusalem right by you. And no, I don't think there's a South Village Green either! My sister's ex-boyfriend used to live in a house on Orchid, maybe 5 houses in from the end by Jerusalem. He had all sorts of strange creatures in his backyard... A peacock, racoon, ducks, etc. I don't know how long you've been living in Levittown but back in the early 80's, he had a flock of doves that used to circle the sky right above his house. Day in, day out, they would not leave-they just circled and circled. Now that I think about it, it was kind of cruel. As you know, Levittown yards aren't very big. Anyway, they don't live there anymore. I used to volunteer for the Wantagh Levittown Ambulance Corps and know the ER of NCMC well. Where are the falcons? I saw a few in Orient Point last month and there's a nest on the Preserve in Merrick but I didn't see any there. | I grew up in East Meadow (south of Hempstead Turnpike, east side of Newbridge Road) and have lived in West Islip for the last 25 years. I have only seen a hummer ONCE in all that time. It was in my West Islip garden of about six years ago. I was so shocked that at first I didn't realize what it was! And of course too shocked to register exactly what flower it was visiting! DOH!!!!! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I haven't seen my hummers since Monday the 26th and I have been seeing them daily so I think they have left for down south. I am leaving my feeder up in case any migrants stop by. I am in Nassau County on the North Shore, really near the water. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I've had them around a few times a day up until the rains came. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| Nancy-- Where on Long Island are you? I know that attracting hummers on Long Island seems to be a very hit or miss proposition, depending on ones location. I used to see them buzz thru the yard afew times a year for the years I lived here but last Fall I decided to really plant my yard with lots of Hummer attractive flowers and vines. I continued my planting this spring and my yard really is a little hummer paradise but few find it. At least I have (or had) some! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
I'm just east of Huntington, walking dist to the water. I started getting Hummers when I started collecting fuchsias. Altho I didn't hang any this year, I usually hang about 4 or 5 of them. The hummers will come & linger for a long time to go to each bloom...even when I'm sitting 5' away! I would get them thru-out the day too! BTW, I never use feeders...too much trouble for me, lol! Once the hummers start coming, they go to many flowers including impatiens! ~~Nancy |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Just saw a hummer this morning on my flower bed as I was looking out the front door. So cool to be only a few feet away and be able to just stand there watching him go to each flower. How long do they hang around our metro area before they head south? Where do they go for the winter anyway?? Valerie |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Well, the end of September and there are still two female Hummingbirds hanging around my garden everyday. I am surprised that they are here this late but I do have lots of hummer attractive flowers in bloom. Plus my Pinapple sage is blooming and they love that with the vivid red flower spikes. |

| Just wanted to let everyone know I saw my first hummingbird ever in my garden two weeks ago!! It was busy visisting my tall red zinnias! I saw it again a few days later, have not seen them since. I was totally amazed, could not even move to get the camcorder for fear I would miss the show!! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I saw my first too only a week ago. It was gone in a flash. Was it my imagination? I waited to see if it would return but it did not. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Could of been heading south on migration. Mine are gone now, last seen on Friday. I have my feeder up in case any late migrants stop by but I have so many hummer flowers they often just ignore it and go for the flowers instead. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| A gardening friend of mine said they have all gone from my area now. Went to warmer climates. But I am keeping my feeder out too just incase there are a few stragglers. Anyone know where they go for the winter? My friend said where they go but I forgot what she said.. Valerie |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

Hi Karin, I too live in Levittown and just last summer my husband and my Mom saw one in our front yard! I was disappointed I missed it :-( I live across the street from the East Green so we are practically neigbors! Some info on our "Greens", the North one is over by Parkside Drive and Schoolhouse Road/Wolcott Road and the Levittown North Lanes Bowling Alley, The West Green is on Newbridge Road, The Center Green in on Center Lane and yes there was a South Green which WAS by the Levittown South bowling Alley, but has been long since gone. :-) marg |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

Rita . Thanks for the map link.I check it every day. I'm putting out my feeder this weekend reguardless of the weather. I hope anyone who sees a hummer [no suv's please]lets us know. They should be in the metro area in about 10 days tom |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Not long now. The map is showing one for extreme south NJ, Cape May. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I think people in the ny metro area will start seeing them by weeks end if the weather holds! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| Seems like this cold spell put a temporary stop to the Northward migration along the eastern seacoast. Just as well, because the cold yesterday and today is doing nothing to help the buds along on my cherry tree. I did see some weeping fruit trees in bloom around town and the Bradford Pears along the streets in town look like they will be in bloom soon! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Ok, first Hummer of the year for me. A lovely male buzzed thru today in a hurry to go somewhere. I went out yesterday to Home Depot and Hicks and came home with Impatients, annual Red Salvia and three plants of Lady in Red Salvia. They were sitting in the trays from the Nursery this morning and early afternoon so they were like a red beacon for any hummingbirds. As far as I saw, he ingorned them and was fussing around the Cherry Blossoms on the Cherry tree. I am going to put up more feeders as soon as the extra sugar water I just made up cools. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Something I was thinking about as I watched a hummer drinking from my oriole feeder this afternoon (looks like a big orange) is that I am always amazed at how small they are after not seeing them for awhile. I guess when they come everyday steadily then I just get used to their size. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
I saw my 1st one of the season this morning!!! I was amazed at how small he was too. I guess you DO have to get used to that all over again each year, lol. This is the 1st year that I put a feeder up & 1st year that I've seen them this early. (I usually put out fuchsia plants & get hummers that way.) I'm amazed that he even found the feeder. It's by a window & under a tree in the shade. What a thrill!!!!!! ~~Nancy |

| I had one a week ago at my fuscia in a window box. When living in Colorado my wife and I had a hummer follow us for a half hour or more while hiking. We were down by the Beuna-Vista / Salida area hiking the 14'ers. There are lots of them there but never had one follow like that. Maybe it was my bright red backpack. He made many close fly-bys like a bee buzzing your ear. Even when we stopped for a break he would just hum there looking at us. Someone above commented about bats on LI. They are everywhere. I put up a bat house and it is now full every season. Go to any body of fresh water, Nassau or Sufflok and look up towards the moonlight over the water and you will see them swooping back and forth. I use to catch them as a teenager at Tudor park in Hicksville with a basketball and t-shirt. |

| I have a male around here that I see every few days for the past week. This is unusual for me as I only see males passing thru in the spring migration and later in the summer have only females here in my garden or maybe they are juviniles (I can't tell the difference). I plan to visit the Sanctuary in Riverhead as soon as its open in August!!! |

| I grew up in St. James and during the 50's my mom had a trumpet vine growing up the chimney...we had many hummers each summer. I too grow trumpet vines and many other flowers to atract them....no luck so far but I keeep hoping. I have to my delight seen baltimore oriole and yellow goldfinches in my garden. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I have one hummber feeder up now because its so hot that I have to change the sugar water every two days. The hummer does like the feeder but I see it on the plants more often than the feeder. They especially like the trumpet honeysuckle, mexican sunflowers, mexican cigar, hummingbird mints and Cardinal Climbers. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I haven't seen any hummers in about four days. Hope that they haven't left already but the weather has been very much like Fall!!!! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| I used a hummingibrd flowers seed mixture for sale at the local Duane Reade as part of a butterfly garden I was planting in my backyard in Rockaway Park in Queens, never expecting to see hummingbirds. The other day, however, I had two separate sightings (for all I know it was the same bird twice). I assume they were ruby-thraoted, although the coloring was grey-bluish and not like any of the pictures I've seen of ruby-thrateds on the internet...maybe they were juveniles, or males with especially muted colorings? I'm near Jamaica Bay wildlife refuge, so it's possible they were stopping there as part of a migration and just happened across my garden. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Been seeing the hummingbirds again for the last three days. Of course, they might not be the same ones. But they are always either females or juveniles (I can't tell the difference). I usually see the males only during the Spring migration. |

| Anyone putting out their Hummer feeders yet? I am boiling water to put out my feeder first time this year although I think its early. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Haven't seen many Hummers this Spring at all. Usually see more passing thru during migration. It's not as if there is nothing here to attract them. The Trumpet Hunneysuckle alone, growing all over the place in my yard, should be bringing them in. |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Well, I have been seeing a female hummingbird in my yard the past two days, yesterday and today. Saw her twice today. This is very good for me as usually I see the migrants pass thru and then have to wait until late summer until they show up in my yard on a dailey basis. |

RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

We live in the country in upstate, NY, we get hummingbirds, between twelve to 16 hummers a year. I'm forever filling the feeders.....I'm not complaining, it's worth it, their so entertaining, their always fighting for a spot, those that can't find a perch wait in the crab tress till they get an opportunity. We have a feeder hanging from our front porch and one looking out the back into our yard. We moved up here five years ago from Long Island. So it's a treat to finally get to see them up close and personal...:-) Their simply adorable and amusing to watch. Please don't hate me, I hope you get the opportunity to see them...:-) |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

Saw my first one this AM .I'm sure they've been around for a few weeks .I just got back from a wedding in Texas. I get 2-3 birds /day but I don't think they nest around here. They always disappear for about a week |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??

| I know this is an old thread, but yay! I'm happy to hear these reports about hummingbirds on Long Island. I've been trying for years but I never knew if I was wasting my time or not. I will keep waiting. Also, in reply to a 7 year old comment, yes there are definitely bats on Long Island. I see them all the time during the summer. I have some in the small strip of trees behind my house. If you ever see birds flying in circles at dusk, take a closer look. They might be bats! |
RE: Hummingbirds on LI ??
| | |
| Just saw a male ruby throated hummer in my backyard a few minutes ago checking out my orange tiger lilies. I've lived in the Patchogue area (mid-Suffolk on the South Shore) of LI over 40 years, and this is the first time I've ever seen a hummer! It was gorgeous--a truly amazing site. I feel privileged to have been graced with his presence, albeit all too briefly. Hopefully, he'll be back for more nectar soon. Regarding bats, we do indeed have them in our area. We love them, as they feed on the numerous mosquitoes we have in our area near the Bay. Also, we were privileged a few years ago to have an osprey come flying through our backyard, and we were visited by a red tail hawk about a month ago. |
