What to plant now, and where to get it?

Posted by brooklynfireescape (My Page) on

I have a north-facing fire escape that does not get a full day of sun. What can I plant now that will do all right without full sun? I am most interested in planting vegetables, fruit, and herbs.

Also, where are good places to shop near North Park Slope??

Thanks!

Does it get any sun at all, or is it exact north and always shaded?
Take care,

Hi thanks for replying. It gets full sun until about noon due to gaps in the buildings around it. I got tomato, basil and italian parsley plants two weeks ago and they're actually doing really well.

Swiss chard, kale, thyme, lettuce, and other greens should be OK in your location. You can plant spinach in the Fall to over-winter, but it must be well mulched. How did your tomatoes work out? Good luck!

Thank you! I just pulled my first two red tomatoes off the plant!
