Lack of blooms, in general

Is it me, or is it the lack of sun we have had lately? Just about everything has pooped out with the blooms. Only things still going strong are lisianthus and pellies. I have a garden of pretty much nothing but green. Anybody else having this?

What are you growing? I don't have many annuals in this year, but the perennials seem to be doing ok. Are you deadheading? that sometimes helps. Best, Jen

First of all I don't think I've heard of lisianthus or pellies. Maybe that's your problem! Just a little joke. Anywho I hate to brag my garden is beautiful. With coneflowers, hollyhocks, zinnias, morning glory, sweet pea. The morning glories stalled for awhile. Now there movin on up. I've been gardening since about 1989. Believe me it's taken this long. To have somewhat of a decent garden. Hang in there. Gardening is a tedious all consuming labor of luv. It's not for everyone. Only a few nutjobs who get off on flowers veggies and all of the wonderful things gods soil offers us!!!:)I hope to get some pics of my garden up on the web so stayed tuned

Diascia not blooming; bacopa not blooming; impatiens looking wimpy; petunias petering out; salvia not sending up new blooms after deadheading; columbine not reblooming; achillea hasn't bloomed yet; geranium didn't rebloom. These are all things that did well for me last year, and yes I deadheaded; even gave some (like the diascia) heavy haircuts. The only difference is that I went organic this year. But that didn't seem to affect the early blooming ... things were doing very well late spring, early summer.

How disappointing! My Achillea has bloomed, but I'm not growing any of those annuals this year, so can't compare. My perennials did bloom at the expected time, more or less. Right now, I have Daylilies, Achillea, Stokesia, Lilies, Honeysuckle, Lavender, Veronica, Coreopsis... I have noticed that everything gets dry very quickly, even when it was overcast. So hot! Have you thought of adding a high-phosphate fertilizer? Sounds like maybe you have more nitrogen (all that greenery)? Good luck! Best, Jen

I was thinking what Jen said. Could be your soil's depleted. Try working some bone meal (a high-phosphorus, organic material) into the soil? Especially with the heat, keeping plants well-watered but not overwatered is a challenge, too. Another possibility: perennials might be rootbound.
