Perilla - Shiso search

I am looking for the person who I was emailing with regarding Shiso aka Perilla. A friend of mine (who I met thru Gardenweb) sent me an email out of the blue asking if I wanted any. I had forgotten I had shared it with her a few years back and thought what a coicedence as we had been talking about it. She is bringing some by on Friday, so if you want some let me know?!

Marg, What can you tell me about perilla? I have it all over-- and I love it. Can it be eaten? I've read both - yes & no. I was thinking of giving the seeds to my canaries. ~Nancy |

Hi Nancy, I don't know all that much about it except that it is used primarily in Asian cooking and can be used in salads and also the fact that it adds a great color to the garden! I have used it a bit and it is kind of bitter, but has an interesting taste. Let me know how it works out with your birds! marg |

| What variety do you have Nancy? I have tried both the purple and the green variety. The Japanese and Koreans like the green shiso in their cuisine. Being Vietnamese, I grew up eating the purple variety. Purple shiso is more bitter than the green. I use both varieties in salads, it give my food a anise-like flavor. I can give you some recipes to try! Just as long as they are growing organically. |

I have the purple variety and it is growing organically. I'd love to see some recipes! Thanks! It's very exciting to me to be able to eat something that grows so easily. ~Nancy |
