I posted a picture in the gallery of my successful window box....by that I mean I have seen hummingbirds at the flowers. It's very exciting for me!

I just saw one on Sunday. I put a feeder and a lot of salvia on our south facing back balcony, but the bird was on our north, street side balcony (also with salvia). I live in Brooklyn, a few blocks from Prospect Park. Any other Brooklyn people having luck with hummingbirds? I'll try to take a photo next time...

jblum, which side of the Park are you on? We're on the east side, and have never seen a hummingbird over here, but would love to. I'm going right out to find some salvia! :)

JScanlin,
I'm in Park Slope, just one avenue west of the Park. I've only seen two in five years, but hopefully with the right plants and a feeder, there will be more.

Here's an update. We've had a hummingbird come to our South balcony almost every day since early September, between 8 and 9AM. Since it only comes for a few minutes, I assume it comes every day and we're lucky to see it every few days. It's attracted to the salvia, but hasn't touched the feeder.

here's another park sloper....

first garden planted this year. love the color of a true red, so i planted some lobelia cardinalis with the added bonus of the possibility for some hummingbirds. well, one day in august i was playing hooky at home, peered out my window and there flitting from blossom to blossom was a hummer! i was so surprised and completely estatic. so yes, we've been lucky with the lobelia cardinalis. unfortunately i haven't seen it any other time i am normally at home, so i am assuming it likes the mid-day warm dappled shade. i guess i'll just have to play more hooky :)

If you can find the black and blue salvia...you will be guaranteed hummers! I live in Sullivan County and in my area I never saw a hummer til I planted the black and blue salvia along with some bright red salvia.

Next year I'll add that to my "Lady in Red" salvia. Where did you buy it? I got my seeds from Burpee.

For some reason, our hummer doesn't touch the feeder, so I may stop using it and rely only on the salvia.

I've started a hummingbird garden. You are so lucky to have seen one of these beauties. I'm hoping next year that I will have at least one visit my garden. I'm determined to have hummers in my yard.
