RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Well lynn, I know Suffolk is a big place, but I've really only hit a few nurseries. I am very happy with Talmage Farm Agway in Riverhead (If you watch Martha on TV, you may have seen Ellen Talmage on the show last week. I must say, nothing personal, but I don't watch Martha). They grow all their own perennials on the island. If it's not at the store, and it is available at the nursery, they'll bring it down. I can't compare their prices to the rest of Suffolk, but compared to the south fork, they are very good. Most 1 gallon perennials are $6.49.

Most other places I have gone to don't offer a good variety. I am lovin' Wheatly Farms! My son plays lacrosse down the road so I've been traveling there twice a week (but it all ends tonight with the championships). I check to see what they have on the first night, do some research at home, and then usually purchase on the second night! Tonight I plan on picking up some dwarf bush honeysuckle. They are small (and $2.50!), but I've never seen them anywhere else and I'll give them a shot. (okay, I realize that is not a perennial but I have gotten perennials there!)

Where do you shop?

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

My all-time favorite is Mohlenhoff's in Huntington. They have some hard to find plants and sometimes rare flowers. Also, if you join their mailing list, they send you info and discount postcards (25%)

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Amy..I love Peconic River Herb Farm, and as you know, Wheatley Farms. If I have to stay local, Stables in East Moriches has the most variety.

Okay, where in Huntington is Mohlenhoff's?

 o
RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

I have to say Peconic River Herb Farm is my favorite Nursery by far. I have been out there twice already this year. This late they always have sales on their annuals and prennials so you can get a good buy on filling in any bare spots were those prennials just didn't come up this spring.

I love the herb farm and have been enjoying it for at least 10 years. Chris is absolutely inspiring. BUT, I have to say that I find the prices have gone up too much over the years. I tend to buy there at the beginning and end of the season.

Well, for those more eastern folks...Daisy's nursery in Bayport is a favorite of many. There is a huge selection of plants (trees, shrubs and perennials) at good prices and the staff there is friendly and helpful! Another good one is Warners out in Baiting Hollow on Sound Avenue - don't get there much but it is an adventure - lots of selection!

I live a few blocks from Cheap Sam's (North Service Road, Exit 62, LIE) And I find they have a nice selection and I love the fact I can drive my truck through the nursery and load it up, then check out at the gate!

I got a great crabapple from cheap Sams this year. Prices there are very good for trees.

Somehow, I have been managing to stay away from the local nurseries so I stay away from trouble and buy no plants!

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

One of my friends told me about a little place in Manorville that I've been passing for years on the way out to our summer house. Yesterday afternoon, after sitting in traffic on County Road 111, trying to get to the LIE, we decided to take a break and check the place out.
At first we were confused as entry is uncertain, although there are three or four entrances, as well as plenty of parking. There were cars and people scatterred everywhere so we walked around the place to stretch our legs and kill time.
After about ten minutes we were greeted by a small dog with an ear of corn, followed by a young lady who introduced herself as Benetta( unsure of the spelling).
She apologized for the congestion and dissarray, explaining that she was in the middle of expanding her greenhouse/farmstand/nursery operation and things were moving a bit too fast for her limited help to handle.
Somewhat intrigued by what we were hearing we walked the property with her as her associates fielded a seemingly endless barrage of customers. Several times she was called away to assist with the volumn and returned apologetically for leaving us.
In all we ended up spending close to three hours with the young lady and her associates, including the " famous corn eating dog Tiki", and had a remarkably memorable time.
We were inspired by her vision and dedication, and her deep farming roots. Her mission it seems is to continue old world tradition in this rapidly modernizing society, while providing exceptional quality at prices not guided by our zip code. (Very unusual considerring the clientel that passes through this place).
From what we gatherred she started out 8 or 9 years ago with a tiny farmstand, then equally small greenhouse in which she grew annual baskets. Demand and popularity for her products have caused her to grow considerably and she appears to have a fabulous relationship with the out of towners like ourselves.
Recently she took over the adjacent building, which had been rented for years to a florist/landscaper/mason contractor who we learned had been cheating it's customers.
She said she learned of wrongdoings and immediately had the people removed.
Her plans now include an alliance with several quality contractors/friends that provide services including masonry, waterfalls and ponds,gunite/steel and vinyl pools, marine construction and land clearing to name a few.
( We know one of her pool men as he did our Amagansett pool & waterscape four years ago).
She seems optimistic that she can provide exceptional quality through this new alliance, while adding to her existing operation. From what we saw and heard we expect her to do just that.
All in all we thoroughly enjoyed our stay with her and admire her courage and ambition. It was so refreshing to find someone that believes in old world values and fairness to all.
My husband and I work and live in Manhattan and have grown accustomed to inflated prices and poor quality. Finding this place was a breath of fresh air. We plan to frequent them throughout the year as she said they cover all seasons, including Christmas.
Unsure of the name of the place as my husband seems to have lost their business card but I remember that she said she really is the farmers daughter. Her place is located just south of the Long Island Expressway @ exit 70.

I for one will never forget the three hours we spent together and will most definately recommend them to our clients and friends.Well worth the trip and the time to meet some very real people.

Checked out Daisey Garden Nursery today but didn't buy anything. I like the selection at Peconic River much better. No shrubs at Daisey Garden I wanted to buy.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

I'm faily new to gardening, and am defintely making my share of mistakes. I love roses and have been playing with them for the past couple of years with mixed results. I've learned that I don't like to fuss, so I'm staying with roses and perennials that require minimal maintenance. I live in Smithtown and like Hitherbrook Nursery on Rte 25A in St. James. The quality is great and they have a good selection. They carry a number of the more unusual perennials and shrubs which are suitable for Long Island and have done very well for us over the years. Their staff is very knowledgeable and can help point you to the right plant or shrub for your particular set of requirements. "Joe" is a great resource and knows the remedy for most diseases and how to eradicate insects with minimal impact on the environment. For me, having correct information and guidance when I need it is a definite plus.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

We are going to need the tips in the favorite Nurseries threads now that Franks Nurseries has gone under. I used to get lots of things there.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Not a new place, about two years ago a garden center opened in East Northport/Commack on Jericho Turnpike, just west of the intersection of Jericho and Larkfield, across from the Heritage Sears Mall. It used to be a Franks years ago. Last spring they had a fire. But they had plenty of plants outdoors, including starter packs of tomatoes, steppables, lots of herbs and flowers. It looked to be like a co-op with lots of different people selling their wares. Worth a look. And plenty of parking. I believe the sign says "Elwood Farms".

 o
RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

I have sad news to report. I just Googled Mohlenhoff's and discovered that they went bankrupt in March 2005 (see link below). Also, last week, when I drove by that place called Elwood Farms on Jericho Tpke (formerly a Frank's), it looked closed down as well. I do like the selection at White Post Farms for perennials and annuals (but not so much for shrubs). For that, I guess I'll go to Home Depot. Also, can anyone recommend any of those myriad nurseries on Deer Park Road for a good deal on shrubs? They all seem like wholesalers rather than retailers. Thanks!

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

More sad news. Drove by Elwood Farms on Jericho Turnpike and it is no more. The sign is still there but the whole place was bulldozed.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Fort Hill Nursery in Huntington (on Northern Blvd.)is one I enjoy visiting. I also like Paul's on Pulaski Road in Huntington - they're pricey but they have nice stock.

Roslyn Nursery (in Dix Hills possibly - they're south of the LIE) is a really nice nursery...and they have a tremendous amount of stock. Again, somewhat pricey (i.e., not Frank's), but very good stock.

Unfortunately with Frank's gone we all need to find alternatives. I live in Nassau and there are a few local small time folks whom I visit in Bethpage. I've also, for the first time, ordered plants, (yes...PLANTS!) directly from Burpee. I purchased some Lisianthus which I cannot find around here. I have no idea what condition they'll be when they finally arrive nor if they'll grow. But I figured I'd spend the 18 dollars and take a chance on a flat of 12 plants.

Ciao,
OITGAD

Elwood Farms has moved to Larkfield Road just south of Jericho Turnpike in the Trader Joe's shopping center.

Went to Daisys in Bayport today. Nice selection of shrubs and hanging baskets and reasonable prices! Also went to Rosewood Nursery in Farmingville-good selection of ornamental shrubs. Happy gardening!

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Anyone know of a DECENT nursery near Bay Shore? I feel like I live in Queens again!

 o
RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

Shannon71, I've always used STABLES GARDENS on Deer Park Avenue, North Babylon. Across from BENNIGAN'S Restaurant. The prices are very reasonable and the staff is very helpfull. Another good one that I go to to find rare plants is: Van Bourgondien Nursery
(631) 667-1111 Address: 833 Deer Park AV.
Dix Hills, NY 11746
Very nice place.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

"The Bloomin Haus" or house in Holtsville, not sure of spelling, has a tremendous selection. Its actually located on both sides of the street. Perenials on one side and annuals on the other.Getting in and out is a bit difficult but its a nice place. I find it to be a bit on the pricey side though. I've been to Rosewood Gardens as mentioned in another post and have never bought anything from them. Nothing too outstanding and much too expensive. Now that Franks is gone I'm left with Home Depot and Lowes which are ok but not the greatest.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

The best Suffolk nursery i've found is Felix Perennials. He had been on Elwood Road in Huntington, but this year has moved to (or maybe just retained his prime location) Riverhead . I checked on the web at www.Felixperennials.com and see he is at 244 Horton Ave in Riverhead. (directions available there) He has wholesale prices but is open to the public. He deals primarily in perens, esp. the more common ones, but his prices are great. Also Prianti Nursery in Huntington which has a huge selection of perens and annuals. They are just off exit 42 of the Northern State Pkwy. Haven't checked out new location of Elwood Farms yet. they were great last year. Same prices as Felix, a little cheaper than Prianti (prianti has diff. size pots to choose from, i've divided single pots w/ success...saves money). Just went to Bloomin' Haus and found their prices high in comparison but selection good.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

I have been shopping at the Bloomin Haus Nursery in Holtsville for years now and I find that there is no other place like it, with such a huge selection and reasonable prices. Beautiful waterfalls and a free petting zoo!I love it.

RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

My wife goes to the Long Island Perennial Farm every year. They have a great selection and great prices on their stuff. I think they are located in riverhead. Its hard to find so you better get directions from their website liperennialfarm.com

 o
RE: Favorite Suffolk County nursery

The Glass Greenhouse in Jamsport, NY is a must visit nursery. They have over 5 acres of plants to look and choose from. They are so helpful and knowledgable there as well. They have almost anyhting you can think of and if they don't they will get it for you. I love this place!

It's located on 25 in Jamesport. Easy to find but a bit of a drive for most Long Islanders.
