Blueberries

| I would love to have a blueberry bush. Does anyone know a good nursery I could buy one from in central Suffolk County? Also, can they be grown in a large tub? I get so paranoid about what might be in the soil that's toxic, especially since my gardner put a whole load of "topsoil" that looks like sand and clay where I thought I would get some good garden soil. So now I don't even know where it came from. Is there any inexpensive way to have soil analyzed for contaminants that would produce dangerous fruit or vegetables? |

| you can have your soil analyzed by Cornell Co-op Extension very reasonably. I know the analysis is for nutrients, but I don't know if they test for contaminants. Perhaps you could talk to them. Blueberries are typically available in the Spring at nurseries. But, the larger growers might have them available now if you give them a call. |

| They are advertising blueberry bushes for $19.99 @ Verdeber Nursury in Aquebogue. I think they have a location in the hamptons as well. |

Hi Marti I'm in Suffolk County too. I purchased some blueberry plants through one of the many catalogs I get about 3 years back. This year I finally got some fruit from them. The area I have them growing in used to have pines growing in it, so I knew it should be acidic enough for the blues. I also keep them mulched with pine needles, and will be adding more pine needles in the fall. Don't know if that helps you at all, but thought I'd chime in, :) Alberta |
