really tall privacy screen

Hi,
We just moved into a great home with lots of potential on Long Island (central Suffolk Co), and are looking for ideas for privacy screens. The home behind ours is one of those new McMansions--it is literally twice the size of ours, and is a real eyesore. What can we plant that will:
a) grow fairly quickly
b) grow really tall
c) act as a privacy screen year-round.
We are thinking of bamboo, but have been warned against it. We love the wild and natural look of bamboo--conifer privacy screens sometimes look too manicured and rigid. Any thoughts or suggestions (including tips on places to buy trees/plants) would be greatly appreciated. |

If you REALLY want bamboo, get it. Just plant it in the ground with out taking it out of it's nursery container. Or better yet buy a container 1 or 2 sizes bigger, put the bamboo in that and put that in the ground. It's true. If you put bamboo directly into the ground it will soon be everywhere. |

| We had the same problem, and have found (for 8 years) that you can weed-whack bamboo shoots as they rise and it will stay contained to the area you choose. |
