poppy question

hope someone can help me.

The beautiful poppies in my area are blooming now. A few weeks ago, I spread seeds. Papaver rhoeas. I believe I now have seedlings. About 3 inches tall with about 6 - 8 leaves.

Will these babies bloom this year? If they don't, will they be back next year?

Thanks

RE: poppy question

Hi Amy:

I can't believe this. I went on the perennial forum. To post a poppy blurb. Decided to post here. Since I love this forum. Saw your post. I don't think they'll bloom this year. My poppy question is this. For years I'd see the seed packets of oriental poppies as a kid in the market. I said I'll never be able to grow these beautiful things!!! About three summers ago in the middle of a drought I planted some of those tiny black seeds. They came up. The dirt was like sand. I watered. The next year I got flowers. About two years ago. I transplanted the stand . The following year only one flower came up in the new spot. Though in the original spot the flowers reseeded and came back double!!! My only complaint is They only lasted about four days this year!!! Anyone else experience this. With last weekends hot sun the petals all fell off. Then came the big storm. That spelled the end of my babies. Is this common for poppies. Their beautiful but 4days!!! Also a couple I cut for inside the heads droop. I remember Martha Stewart saying to singe the stems. I tried that they still droop. Anyone have any tips and also anyone in Rockland county area experience this very short 4 day bloom this year?Good luck with your poppies. I hope their as beautiful as mine were before they croaked. They were right outside our front door in full sun. How exciting that first morn last wed when the first one bloomed.

I also grew some by seed last year. This year they are doing great and blooming today! One plant was started in the garden, and two others I kept in small container until Fall. They aren't that difficult and should bloom next year. As for cutting the flowers, I also had one droop. At the local florists, they put these stiff straws around the stems of Gerber Daisys. Perhaps something like that would work for the poppies.

For quicker results, I'd also recommend the "Shirley Mix". These are annuals that grow fast and bloom in July. They are smaller, but not too small. Plus, the blooming season lasts longer...although each flower also only lasts for a few days. There's just so many flowers so they keep comming.

P. rhoeas is an annual and should bloom this year. It will often self-seed, too, if you don't deadhead, so you'll have even more next year :)

By the way, I just got back from the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, and a bunch of Papaver Rhoes and Papaver Somniferum are in bloom. It's definitely worth checking out.
