Home Depot in Westbury LI receives sod every Friday in the afternoon. Last month while I was there the Sod Truck arrived. The sod was delivered by Fishcetti Nursery a very well known respectable large nursery on the North Shore. The driver advised me not to buy the sod until the day I was going to lay it.
In closing if you wish to buy from HD call to find out delivery schedule and that you're getting the same quality sod that costs more from the nursery. Delivery or transport to your home is another factor to consider.

Pros and Cons - Shannon Nursey on Ft. Hamilton has fresh sod (as Gordon says) and it looks like they keep it wet and healthy. I would go to Home Depot on Hamilton if theirs looks good though - check closely, HD never takes very good care of their plants. Shannon can be expensive, but they have nursey guys that will bring it and lay it down (for a price) if that's want you want.

Also, do some looking around for grass advice in Brooklyn - I seem to remember a horror story or two about sod expiring pretty quickly, but I don't remember the circumstances. Could have been iffy care. I know seed is a bummer, but the old-folks residence down my block just seeded a while ago and their big lawn is GORGEOUS!

Anyhow, best of luck!
