Straw for mulch in Brooklyn??

Posted by chowzdown (My Page) on

I'm looking for straw to use as mulch in my vegetable garden, but I have no idea where to find it. Lowe's and Home Depot don't carry it, and I'm wondering if anyone knows of a good (maybe free?) source. I have no car but I could probably transport a bale in the trunk of a car service...

Thanks!

RE: Straw for mulch in Brooklyn??

I located a place a few years ago that sold a Coast of Maine compressed hay mulch blend in bags (great for small apartment/shed storage).... unfortunately it is in Oceanside on L.I., and even more unfortunately they stopped carrying that product. On the upside they still sell a compressed hay mulch blend of another brand that seems fine (though I'm in love with Coast of Maine products) and we could probably all chip in for a Zipcar wagon or truck and make a run out there a few times a year... i wind up doing that trip alone for such products once or twice a year anyway and the car rental is a major chunk of the cost. I rely on Zipcar wagons and trucks for backyard supply hauling and while it can get expensive it is a membership worth checking out for those occasional necessary large-haul trips.
Every once in awhile (mostly in the fall around Halloween) I see places like Midtown Greenhouse Garden Center (near Atlantic Terminal) with hay bales. And I bet there are schools and businesses that use them for fall decor that would be happy to have you remove them after use (but i'm just guessing).
