In search of potting soil for a community project. . .

Last year I did a neat project with the neighborhood kids in my little row house front yard: we started all sorts of seeds and tended them through the summer. One thing I did not anticipate was how much of what they planted they wanted to keep on my stoop, so I ended up with an overcrowded front garden with only some success. I had about 60 4" pots with assorted plants and no room for them to really take off.

This year I've acquired a bunch of 1 gallon pots so the plants will have a modicum of success and I will insist that the plants live on their stoops (oh imagine the whole block greening up!). My problem: I need enough soil to fill the pots.

Anyone know of a very, very cheap or free way of acquiring enough potting soil to fill 30-50 gallon containers?

The Clark Botanical Garden has a big pile of free compost for the public. It's in Albertson, NY (on LI) so it's a bit far from Brooklyn. Maybe you check with closer botanical gardens and see if they offer something similar.
