Why didn't my delphiniums come back?

Posted by anewgarden (My Page) on

Has anyone got experience with delphiniums?

Out in my sunny front garden full of roses and yarrow and sundrops and coreopis none of them came back! I have a lot of yellows and I'd put some blues in last year. They looked great. But for some reason they didn't come back. One came back where I forgot I'd put it in my back garden which is not quite as sunny. Maybe that is why? Too much sun for them out front/

RE: Why didn't my delphiniums come back?

I am not a delphinium specialist. However, I successfully grew standard delphiniums on a south facing roof terrace for many years (beyond even their relatively short expected lifetime), so I don't think sun is your problem.

I am new to this list so don't have a sense of your gardening expertise from prior posts, so please forgive me for asking about your experience level. If you are a new gardener, one of the singular things that people aren't aware of is that the roots of many purchased perennials and annuals (or even plants grown from seed at home) become "bound", and must be broken up before planting for the plant to thrive.

Best

Gaby
