In your travels to nurseries & garden centers, have you seen any with a decent selection of bamboo? I am looking for black bamboo, Phyllostachys nigra 'Hale' for a container on my balcony.
thanks!

RE: bamboo

I've been looking for different bamboos as well, I need tall, dense, clumping kind to act as a screen. I just went to the peconic river website and they actually have the bamboo you're looking for, though it's expensive!!

Not to mention a bit of a hike for you. However, there is a trip planned. I think it's for the 15th... might be right for you!!

Here is a link that might be useful: Peconic River Herb farm

RE: bamboo

You are right, that is pretty expensive. I was looking for the "hale" variety, but the "black jade" variety is very pretty and it looks like one of the shorter varieties...
I don't like buying living things mailorder, so maybe I will make a trip out to the PR herb farm there. It's probably going to have to wait until August, when I have a newer car... the A/C has crapped out on my car, so long trips in traffic are out of the question for now.
I sent an email to Bamboo Bob www.idigbamboo.com in Morristown NJ (much closer than riverhead!) to see if he has the variety i am looking for... haven't heard back yet. Unfortunately he doesn't list what he has available on his website.
thanks for the info about the Peconic River Herb Farm!
