i am VERY NEW to hostas. i just started landscaping my yard only last fall (on a tight college grad student budget!!) but this week i am putting in a single "Hosta PILGRIM" plant and a few "GOLD STANDARD".

here are representative pics from yahoo, not my garden

PILGRIM:

GOLD STANDARD:

it's a corner property and it feels like its going to take yearz to get enough hosta of the same kinds to create a edging along the perimeter of all lawn-bed borders.--- already can hardly wait to divide eyes next spring! =L

Right now I have about 60-70 different types of hosta in my yard. You are right, if you are going to keep dividing one hosta it will take you forever. Especially, if you select one that is difficult. If you aren't too particular about hostas you can usually pick some up at yard sales or craigslist.com That's how I originally fell in love with them. I bought some variegated and solid green ones from a woman in my area for about $3 each and they were huge, had to be atleast 4 eyes each. You can always start that way and slowly replace as you can get the funds.

Keep your eyes open for when nurseries have their clearance sales at the end of the season. Both pilgrim and gold standard are pretty common and you shouldn't have a problem finding those at clearance.

whooah! that's an impressive list!

i'll keep checkin cl but so far i'm bewildered to see only plain green hostas listed there for $12-$25 a plant =L

dang now i really want sagae, blue mountains, and liberty, too......

if 1 eye is planted in the summer and well watered/fed, i wonder how many eyes it will hav in the following spring on average?

Sagae and Liberty are gorgeous when they are mature. BUT, they are a bit big for a border, IMHO.

I don't know how close you are to long island, but it seems hostas are listed more frequently on craigslist there.

The number of eyes that grow in a season varies with growing parameters and some just stubborn. I have one hosta, eskimo pie, I just love it, but I've had it for atleast three years and it is still just one eye. On the other hand I have stiletto, which goes nuts.

From what I am told it take a hosta 5 years to achieve greatness. Hostas LOVE a lot of water, keep them happy and they should reward you.

I have some Blue unknown hostas available if you would like. I have been posting plants on Freecycle the past few days and the response has been overwhelming. I just havent posted these yet. I have 2 large ones. I am in Levittown. Email me if you are interested?

I buy hostas from White Flower Farm in connecticut. I figure they are just across Long Island Sound, their climate is close to mine. Everything I've ordered from them does well. They are expensive. Since nothing has died on me, I can't comment on their refund policy.
