Choosing flowers for enclosed corridor

I just moved into an apartment in Brooklyn that has a small garden. About 1/4 of the space is a long 5'by 25' corridor that has ~ 1' borders on the north and south sides of the corridor. The space has good western exposure, but a large tree, tall fences and the apartment limit eastern, southern and midday exposures. My question is this - what type of flowers would thrive in these conditions?

I've got similar issues with sunlight. These plants have done well for me:
Dicentra Eximia
Rudbeckia
Toad Lily
Money Plant
Great Blue Lobelia
Browallia
Torenia
and of course impatiens
some Daylilies are ok in part shade
Good luck!

Check out a good book on shade gardening at a bookstore or the Botanic Gardens -- a lot of Eastern woodland native species should work well, as long as the soil doesn't dry out too much.

Also,

hardy cyclamens
hellebores
epimediums
asarums (wild gingers)
cimifugas
tiarellas
creeping phlox
primroses
hardy geraniums

Hope this helps you get started!

If you're looking for a vine in your very narrow space, try akebia. There are deep purple as well as white flowering varieties, with an edible fruit (though my vine is fairly new and not producing fruit yet). It's classified as invasive in the mid-atlantic states, but you should have no trouble with it in a confined Brooklyn garden.

It is also called fiveleaf akebia or chocolate vine.

The Missouri Botanic Garden (see link) has good information, but not a good photo of the vine in flower.

This site has good photos of four of the flowering types:

Good luck!

things that have done nicely for me (and self-spread) with minimum maintenance in small gardens with minimal light: wood poppies, ferns (esp ostrich), yellow waxbells, foamflowers, epimedium sulphureum, daylilies, hostas, columbines.
