grass seeding itself

| Hi,
I am taking care of a lawn, I don't know what kinds of grasses are in it but it hasn't been taken care of for awhile. My theory at this point is to let the grass grow until it seeds itself. I see the seed on the grass now. How long do I have to wait until the seeds start to spread? The grass is getting tall and I don't want to wait too long before I cut it.
Thank you.

| Make sure that you do not let the grass go to seed. This stresses the grass and you don't want that. Use cool season grasses to fill in bare spots on the lawn and keep the seeds moist with a spritz of water several times a day. Make sure that the grass is always kept at a mowing height of 3 inches. This allows just a third of the grass to be removed at a time and allows for healthy growth. Make sure and fertilize the lawn at least 3X/year with a low nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite and do it around Memorial Day, Labor Day and then finally at Thanksgiving. Give the lawn at least an inch of water per week and water deeply so that the water reaches down to the root zone.Use a rain gauge or tin cans measuring off an inch to calculate both the rainfall and the extra water you give the lawn. |

| Hi, Thanks for all the info. It turns out I had to cut it by more than a third. My landlady wanted it cut. I was worried that the cool wet weather we've had would do cause trouble but it has survived wonderfully. The mulching mower may have helped there. I will keep your info in mind. Thanks again.
