when to put out a Bougainvillea

Hi,

I have a Bougainvillea in a hanging plant pot that I've kept reasonably happy all winter inside. When can I put it out? It will end up hanging on one corner of the garage (location #1), getting nothing but sun with grass underneath it or the other corner (#2) with less sun and pavement and cobblestones underneath but maybe more heat during the day.

I don't plan to repot it, change it's soil, etc. It was in location #2 all last summer and happy there. I'm thinking of moving it so it will out of my way as I walk around that corner.

Whadyathink?

Cheer,

It's safe now -- a well-established bougie can take temps down to the 40s in a pot without suffering too much, so long as it's not wet.

Bring it out, fry it in the sun, and watch it bloom!

Interesting. What if it is wet? (like it will be much of this week.)

Thanks.

Bougainvilleas seem to do much better and flower more in dryer soil. I think it relates to stressing the plant into bloom.

The rain this week probably won't kill your hanging bougies considering whatever they're hanging from will provide at least a little protection, so I say go for it.

Once the sun comes back out and the soil dries out, your bougies should perk right up.

Hi all,

Thanks for the help. Unfortunately the plant isn't happy outside yet. I moved it from a corner where I was running into its thorns to another sunnier corner. I haven't seen any new leaves but at least there are some stragglers from when it was inside. It had some greying when we kept getting rain and cold back in May but that has gone away.

Last year it lost all its leaves and sprouted new ones by now. I wonder why it is stagnating now.

I'm not adding any water since we've had tons of rain. The soil in the pot is dry so bracts "could" appear if other factors were right.

Any thoughts?

Thanks.
