Sigh . . . my lilac did not bloom

| I have a little lilac tree/bush in a large pot outside. Its about 5 years old and has been blooming beautifully for the last 3. This year, the little buds appeared in March, hinting at the beautiful purple they would bloom into. However, its now May 1st, most of the other lilacs in Brooklyn bloomed 2 weeks ago, and there's nothing out there. It looks like the buds turned brown and dry and the few leaves that were coming out crumpled up, brown and dry. There is one small shoot that has a few flowers and a leaf or two on it but for the most part it looks like everything died. I snapped off a twig today and the center is green but I am worried. I think this happened because of the cold snap that happened over the last few weeks, temperatures almost going to freezing. Any thoughts on whether this could be the reason?
My other concern is whether it can survive for the future. With no leaves on the plant, how will it make food to thrive into next year? Will it just go through its cycle again and flower later into the season this year or is it done for? Can I do anything to nurse it back to health? |

| Lilacs are pretty cold hardy. It's unlikely a near frost could damage them ... especially since other lilacs nearby bloomed. Could it be rootbound in its pot? Or could you have let it dry out in the heat? |

| It also sounds to me like the soil got too dry while it was still growing. Lilacs are usually rejuvinated and stimulated by cutting back hard . Make shore the soil remains moist so it can create new growth. Lilacs bloom on old wood so this years bloom is lost. |
