RE: Hummingbirds

I saw my 1st one a few days ago too. This is the 1st year that I put up a feeder. I usually have to wait until the end of May to see a hummer because that's when I put up my fuchsia plants. I'm so glad I finally got a hummer feeder!! :o)

RE: Hummingbirds

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I know they were buzzing my cherry blossoms when they were blooming. Had some on my Azeleas too. Mostly they seem to be quick sightings like the one yesterday, were the bird landed in the cherry tree and just looked around for awhile.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I never see them. And I have all the right flowers.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Why do you hesitate to put up a feeder?

...from one who knows nothing about hummingbird attraction but is attracted...

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Oh..I remember seeing hummers in Brooklyn... not to long ago.. but I can't remember just when.. a fleeting visit to my roof garden... let me see.. yes.. it was back a few years..when there were bees here also... Gordon

RE: Hummingbirds

Gordon,
If you want Bees plant a tomatillo plant, for some reason they flock to that plant....6 feet away and you can hear the Buzzzzzzzzz, keeps all my plants pollinated. Try it.

RE: Hummingbirds

Believe it or not - I was in a friend's backyard garden on 20th and 7th in Manhattan two days ago and we saw one - seemed to like the verbena. Also saw our first lighteningbugs of the season.

RE: Hummingbirds

This years migration has started. I saw 2 birds at my friends feeders yesterday. I have also seen birds by my kitchen window for the last two weeks . finally figured that they we going after my single flowered dwarf geraniums that are in bloom and red.

RE: Hummingbirds

Ahhh... thanks for the heads-up. I put up a feeder at my sister's new house in order to start attracting them there (heck, there's just about every other critter under the sun roaming her place...lol). Now I know that they are on their way south again!

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I'm on vacation in Ulster County. Friends have 3 feeders up and frequently visiting hummers. I guess they don't know to head south yet. What a delight!

RE: Hummingbirds

Any updates on Baiting Hollow Hummingbird Sanctuary? The website seems like nothing has been updated since last Spring.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

They are in the southern U.S.already. I found a new map at hummingbirds.net

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Here is the link to the Spring Migration Map.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

The map says they are on the island . Mine is up since Monday

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

There is a dot for the end of Long Island for yesterday on the migration map. I haven't seen anything yet but my cherry tree is in bloom. Last year I would see migrants buzz in to stop at the cherry blossoms more often then the feeder.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Saw my first Hummer of the year today at the feeder for a brief while.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

have not seen bird one YET. The apples will bloom this week . MAYBE?

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I saw one pass thru yesterday but it sure did not stay long. I have so many hummer attracting plants, you would think I would see more. Some of the trumpet Honeysuckle is blooming and I have them (Honeysuckle) all over the yard. Plus I put in lots of the annual red bedding Salvias. I also have read that hummers really like the flowers of Blueberries and my Blueberry plants have been blooming for two weeks now. Plus the Azaleas in in full bloom, many nice red Hummingbird attracting colors. I put in a Crab apple last Summer that bloomed already this year and my chery tree bloomed already. You would think those would be very popular. The Cherry blossoms were always popular with passing Hummingbirds past years.

I have seen far less passing thru this spring than in the past two years.

RE: Hummingbirds

A good day in the garden for me as I saw my first Monach butterfly of the season today in my milkweed (which is blooming). Plus I saw a hummer twice today!!!

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I watched a hummingbird in my Brooklyn garden last weekend going crazy for the small densely flowering petunias which I did not plant but have grown over the area that was trampled during construction this past year. I've seen them occasionally other years. And big butterflies were at the just flowering gayfeather this morning.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

OH Jude.. that settles it I'll put up a feeder today...
I was up in the gerden last night about 1 am and saw a something that looked for the word like a hummingbird on the honeysuckle.. must have been a moth.. but with a big big body like a hummer... does anyone have some idea as to the type of moth it might have been.. surely no hummer is out so late or so early.. Gordon

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Well, since June 23rd I have had a female hummer here everyday thru out the day. She comes to the feeder but also to lots of things blooming here like the honeysuckle, Monarda and Butterfly bushes.

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

Go for it Gordon. I'm not far from you. I saw it again a couple of days ago in the wild petunias around 4pm. I was standing in the petunias weeding when it showed up. I stood still except to rotate to see it and it came within a foot of my leg. I searched around on the web but I can't identify it. About the size of a small chicken egg, dark body with 2 bands of bright yellow across the lower body. Wings almost invisible they were going so fast. It stayed a couple of minutes - maybe I disturbed it. Last weekend looking down on it from the deck it was there for a long time.

RE: Hummingbirds

Rainey days seem to be good Hummingbird watching days for me in the backyard. I just look out the kitchen back door, open to the screen door and watch my feeders. Lots of Goldfinches as usual and two hummers today squabbling over who gets to feed at the feeder. One of the hummers spent lots of time visiting the borage flowers in the veggie garden, which I can see from the back door. Usually the borage is full of bees but since its rainey, the bees are absent today. Maybe that's why the hummer liked them today better than usual.

RE: Hummingbirds

Saw my first hummingbird (ever in 22 yrs in Westbury) on Sat feeding on butterfly bushes. Had my parrot in the backyard with me and he was transfixed by the tiny little guy.

RE: Hummingbirds

Sad to say I've never seen a hummingbird in my garden, even though I've had "hummer" favorite flowers... what am I doing wrong?? :-((

I'm starting a new south facing bed right up against the house and would like to put some hummer-attracting flowers into it. I already have some agastache in another part of the garden (but have never seen any hummers on it yet), so I will move that over. Any other suggestions for flowers that stay relatively neat (not wild-garden look) but that will attract hummingbirds?

 o
RE: Hummingbirds

I haven't seen any hummingbirds yet this spring! I usually catch afew migrants at my feeders but nothing this year. And the weather has been so cold and nasty, I don't know how the little birds can survive.

RE: Hummingbirds

2 spotted today (mother's day) near the bay in East Quogue...near Westhampton. YAY!
