Rodents that eat flowers

Hello: This may sound like a funny question (at least I think it is), but I need to know if this 'old wives tale' is true or not. Will human or animal hair buried with the flowers prevent rodents from eating the flowers (like impatiens, petunias, and similar flowers)??? I wanted to know if anybody knows anything about this? Because I have a dog, I did not want to use anything that might hurt him. NB: I do not own the house or property. Also, would a faux owl or cat do the trick. Thank you very much!

My mom has a real problem with voles in her flower garden. They eat everything. She used to have a dog, which helped a bit. With keeping the voles away,I mean. The dog didn't help them eat the flowers.

I have a squirrel that likes to eat my magnolia flowers and budding leaves. Next year I am going to try some cyanne powder on them to see if he will stop. I might be a nice guy and put out a bowl of water for him too. Are you sure it is a rodent? Right now my garden is being eaten by slugs or snails. (they leave a slime trail) Never had this problem before. -Candace

My squirrels eat the crocus flowers sometimes in the very early spring, but other than that the only animls I have that eat flowers are deer. Groundhogs or rabbits might, I suppose, but otherwise I'd suspect slugs or some kind of insect. Slugs can be extremely destructive. I think the business about hair is just an old wive's tale. The cayenne pepper worked on the squirrels when I put it in the birdseed, though. Apparently the birds can't taste it. WW

My mother recently planted petunias in hanging baskets and they are very beautiful. One of the petunia plant is planted up high on a wooden fence. We woke up this morning to find the plant eaten almost to the root. It has us worried that whatever ate that one petunia plant will eat the rest of the other hanging baskets. Is it possible for a rabbit to climb up or a squirrel and eat the petunia? We do have to scatter brain chihuahua dogs that would alert us to anything foreign in our fenced backyard. What could it be?

Rabbits can't climb but squirrels will jump from tree to tree, almost like they can fly,the little buggers. I have a Freestone Peach tree and every summer they eat all my peaches. The birds eat all my cherries.
