| I left a full bag of mulch on my front law overnight thinking i would spread it on my flower bed in the morning. when i went out in the morning, it had clean disappeared.
the mind boggles- some random bloke (probably was a bloke coz it would have been pretty heavy for a girl to carry) passes by my lawn in the middle of the night or early morning- sees a $5 bag of mulch- thinks- oh i think i will help myself.
what are the chances that a random passerby in brooklyn has any use for a bag of mulch! and who would go to the trouble of lugging away a heavy bag of mulch- all to save themselves $5.

Haha, "front lawn" is where you went wrong. doesn't surprise me at all. I was at that Brooklyn Gardener's meetup a couple weekends ago and the people there said that if you plant flowers in the yard before mothers day people will dig them right up for THEIR mothers! And my unrelated-to-gardening theft story is how my 3yr old phone that came free with my phone plan was stolen from my hand by a man on his bike. Whizzed by at the corner of 14th and 5th Ave in broad daylight, and just snatched it from me! Talk about only in NY!!

I linked about it a couple times last month I think. I went to my first meetup with them just a couple weekends ago. Mostly women of various ages and 1 slightly strange man. One woman brought her sister and brother-in-law. We walked around a garden center in Red Hook, which had really great selection, but was a bit pricey for me. It's really hidden, and they had a great keylime pie store also hiding. We planned a couple other meetups to come. The organizer used to do garden design/servicing and I think she is getting back into that now. So, our next meetup is supposed to be at one of the women's houses because she needs help planting/planning her front yard. I think we will be doing some of these projects over time, visiting each other's gardens and helping with a project. You should join! Everyone in the area should join =) Just wish we had a group in manhattan.... hehehe.

Lychee, don't worry, you don't seem any stranger than the rest of us here at gardenweb. Haha!

I can beat that-my friend Rosemary lives in Queens and, the day after she put in some shrubs in her front yard, someone came along during the night and DUG THEM UP!

I used to live in Astoria and after we moved there, we had a large jade plant in a heavy terracotta pot stolen from our window sill, then a really huge philodendron from our terrace that required 2 people to carry it (not the terrace...). Our neighbor had a bush dug up form her yard after planting it so when we got a Japanese maple, I went to Home Depot and bought the thickest chain I could find and chained it to our wrought iron fence after it was lowered into the ground. I made sure the chain was visible so people don't even start doing mischief. - Yeah, only in NY. I used to think it was cute.

I had a pile of nice Coast of Maine potting soil (I'd just rented a car and driven out to Oceanside especially to get it) taken from outside my *apartment* door several years ago. It was in the hallway outside my ground floor apartment door... only person who had access to the ground floor entrance was me, though anyone could come down the stairs. At the time there were a number of addicts hanging around the building and the main front door wasn't secure so there were break-ins happening, but it hadn't occurred to me that potting soil had value to anyone but me. I always wondered if they smoked it.....
