Clematis Questions

| I was wondering if anyone else on LI is currently growing clematis vines? I recently purchased a few at Bloomin Haus Nursery in Holtsville. I am new to the world of twining vines, and hope they will survive for me. I have them planted where they will get sun for about 5 hours per day (said they like sun on the tag) I also have mulch over the roots to keep them wet.
Is there anything special I should be doing to keep them happy and healthy?
Thanks in advance for any advice offered. |

| Mine like southern exposure and "cool feet". Which means the roots do not like the soil they are in to heat up too much. I use plantings of hosta to shade the roots. Mine took a couple years to get "comfortable" after I planted them but they are now happy and taking off this cool wet spring. I think establishing a healthy root system has been key to growing this plant. |

| Just don't worry too much about them. They're hardier than one imagines and I've had clems succumb to wilt only to bounce right back again. Just bury them deeper than the level in the pot and relax. |

| Just wanted to say thank you for the advice! I have planted some hostas around the bottom of my vines. Hopefully they will keep the roots cool. I shall sit back and enjoy my new plants now. |

| I planted my clematis (Niobe and Rosemoor) in full sun and am training them up the interior of the arbor they are next to. I planted under the arbor 'Strawberry Candy' daylilies and with the cedar mulch, this makes the roots cool. Another thing about clematis is that there are ways to determine when to prune the variety you have. Early flowering ones flower before the 4th of July and late flowering flower after this date. Prune the early flowering ones after they flower and with the late flowering ones prune in early spring. |
