bats?

Does anyone know if there are brown bats around in Bklyn? I want to buy a bat house to encourage natural mosquito control (because boy do I need it when we get to July), but I don't want to pay $35 for something that will not be occupied. Anyone have success with this?

I'm in Sunset Park, in case that matters. Also, big into edible gardening and interested in urban permaculture.

Jabel... A few years ago I'd see a few bats flying about in the evening... then they did a conversion to apartments of the church across the street.. and I haven' t seen any lately.. I'm sure their habatats sre desreasing.. it wheather you can get some to live near you I can't say.. if yu are interested in natural mosquito control you might try gettting the purple martins to live near by.. they arre top notch mosquito catchers... http://www.purplemartin.org/

don't know how they do in the city .. they do like to drink from ponds and open water ... so maybe by the park... Mother has them in the south.. and they return every year and hang out nearby till she has the time to put up the houseing for them.. and they are a great sight in the evening .. fluttering about catching bugs.. they do go quite far north .. into canada and they surely travel through... Thanks for those links--it looks like an interesting project, but as a brownstone dweller with a six-story apartment building about 60 ft from the back of my house, I could never create the free space the birds need. Also, the sites noted that the birds do eat a lot of bugs, but not mosquitos, since their schedule/range is not the same.

No one's seen a bat in Brooklyn? What a bummer.

Hi, JA, Gordon,

We have bats in our backyard every summer. Love to see them skimming in big figure 8s for mosquitoes. I'm on the other side of the Park from y'all, so maybe they're more plentiful over this way, but they're definitely out there :)

Best,
Jen

Jessica,

I've seen quite a few bats in Green-wood Cemetery and in Prospect Park.
