to sod or to seed?

| Does anyone have any experiences to share re: seeding a new lawn in NYC? My husband and I are considering seeding a large backyard area (approx. 40' x 25'), and are wondering if anyone here has had success with that. We're perfectly willing to put in the work that goes along with doing so, but if laying down sod gives us a much better chance of having a full, healthy-looking lawn, then it would be great to know that...
Any insights would be appreciated!

| We had a large area of our front lawn die after our sprinkler system stopped working two years ago. There was a section of sod put in prior to this, and this was the first to die from the lack of water! It's more expensive and it does give you instant results..but if you are patient seeds will do fine. My new landscaper (as in the one who would let us or our neighbor know if there is a problem with the lawn lol) reseeded the area and the same year there was substantial growth. It may look a little patchy, but you will save a ton by seeding as opposed to sod. |

| We have been wondering the same thing and have decided to go the sod route. I found a place out in Staten Island that has sod for .30/sq ft and our "yard" is only 350 sq feet. Seemed like a small investment for an instant lawn. We are using labor off of Craig's List to install it. I talked to the guy at Staten Island Top Soil and he said you can always overseed if it gets patchy the next year. |

| gwendolyn718, .30/sq ft seems like a great price. Can you let me know the name of the place on Staten Island? Thanks. |
