Anyone Buy Their Tomato Plants Yet?

I just bought my tomato plants today. Not going to put them in the ground yet but I am wanting to be ready.

I have hired some landscape guys to rototill my veggie garden this weekend and they are also going to add compost. I want my tomatoes to be extra good this year as last year I figgured I didn't have to add any of the usual amendments (bagged manure and compost) and the tomatoes did very poorly last year.

I usually add compost and manure when I plant the tomatoes so thats what I get for scimping last year. Never again.

So heres my list--

2 Siberian
3 Better Boy
2 Parks Improved Whopper
3 The Big Bite
2 Quickpick
4 Early Girl
3 Mykonis
3 Brandy Boy
2 German Queen (Potato Leaf)
1 Black Krim
1 Mule Team
1 Prudens Purple (Potato Leaf)
1 Polish Giant
1 Box Car Willie
1 Mortgage Lifter
1 Arkansas Traveler
1 Crimson Cusshion
1 Bloody Butcher (Potato Leaf)
1 German Johnson
1 Cherokee Purple

Total of 35 plants so far.

Where'd you buy your plants?

That sure is a lot of plants, what do you do with all the fruit from them?

I usually wait till mid May so that the soil can warm up a bit more. I find that the tomatoes sort of just sit there until we get more heat.

I bought my plants at Home Depot and Hicks Nursery.

Actually its not a lot of plants for me. Usually I put in more. I used to make sauce and stuff but I haven't done that lately. Come summer all my neighbors love me as they know I am good for free tomatoes. But mainly I just eat them.

I make sandwiches out of them, salad and just eat them plan the way they are. Yummy. Nothing tastes better than the ones from your own garden.

I planted mine 2 weeks ago, I usually plant them late March.

Yes, they don't do much in cold weather, but those occasional warm spells are enough to get the roots growing so that by the time it is warm enough for consistent leaf growth later in May, there is a decent root system present for robust growth.

Well, I didn't plant on Monday. Instead I planted them all today. Its a beautiful day and quite warm. Nightime temps are supposed to be pretty warm too for the next few days that I saw so this was a good time to get those tomatoes planted.

Tomatoes took off right after I planted them and grew right away so they really like there new home. Now it turns cold again, just when they were going great. I hope this doesn't set them back.

I was just thinking about tomato plants today. Figgured it was still too early to buy them. Come spring every year, I am just itching to get them as I am ready for spring.

I hope this year to buy less as I get carried away. I had way too many tomatoes last year.
