my new garden space was full of stones and tough soil. i've removed most of what is necessary. does anyone know of a source - online or in the city that delivers - of organic soil, or at least soil that isn't totally full of chemicals?? thanks.

i'm sorry, i always think of things after i hit "submit".... if i can't find a source for soil... is it okay to replace with purely compost?? i've dug out around the top 4-5" of stones, roots, and other somesuch. so if i fill that all back in with compost and mix in with the native soil below is that going to be bad for my new plants?? thanks again!!

you could go with a couple of inches of compost. Just be sure it's "well cooked" to avoid burning of new plants.

I see you are in Brooklyn, so hopefully somebody there will have something more local for you ... but I get my 'organic'soil from Chelsea Garden Center ... Fafard's potting mix. Chelsea delivers, but they are expensive. Also get composted cow manure from them. I have ordered online good stuff from Gardens Alive! and Home Harvest (both easily found with a Google search) and even with the shipping, I think it's cheaper than buying locally and having it delivered. I particularly like the Fox Farm products.

just in case anyone else reads this post looking for info, i've found the wonderful lower east side ecology center (lesec) who sells compost and potting soil at a great price ($10 for a 20lb bag) and will deliver at certain times. they are always set up at the union square market and their phone number is 212 477 4022. really great people! and you get to support a local source!!
