brand-new to fire escape gardening. help!

So, I'm about to try growing stuff on my fire escapes this year. The front one gets direct sun many hours a day. The back one gets direct sun, though noway near as much.

I went to Home Depot to look at their selection this weekend. It was paltry at best. Also, someone there told me it was too early to plant outside. Yet I see from this forum that some of you already have. What gives?

I plan on picking up some annuals at Union Square soon. Also, herbs. I want that fresh basil!

Any advice at all on what the heck I'm doing or supposed to be doing would be greatly appreciated.

Well growler.. what you are suposed to do is keep the fireescapes cleared of everything.. but you probually know that already.. no it about the right time to start putting things out .. here... the more hardy things anyway... in a week or so most everything can go out... Gordon

I have planted out everything I bought at Union Square Greenmarket after checking that the grower has had them out of the greenhouse for a while. I am holding back on cuttings I kept indoors over the winter and seedlings grown indoors. We have a pretty cool week coming up. Hzrd to believe after the heat we've had the last couple of days, but all 3 weather servces I've checked say the same.
