First day trips are scheduled- come with us!

Hey Everybody!

I don’t know about you all, but my weekends are filling up fast! So far we have (2) events on the schedule. New and old members are all welcome. Bring your knowledge and interests to the table or our informal gatherings.

April 28th- Brooklyn Botanical Garden cherry blossom festival- Sakura Matsuri. There will be full days events including Japanese drumming & flute music, Geisha, Haiku readings, classical japanese dance, samurai sword demonstrations, even a Kimono fashion show! Dont miss the demonstrations of bonsai, paper cutting, Ikebana flower arranging, there will also be exhibits in ice sculpture, flower arranging and more. Lots to do, lots to see. Marci and I are definitely going. Does anyone wish to join us? We will be leaving early so as to be there when the gate opens at 10am (and hopefully find parking.) http://www.bbg.org/exp/cherries/sakura.html

May 12th The Bayard Cutting Arboretum is having their plant sale. Come stroll the gardens and buy a plant or two! Some folks went last year and had a great time. If you did not make it last year, here is your second chance!

Anyone else have any suggestions, ideas or inspiration let us know!

Glad to see our group is still around. Loved the Bayard Cutting Arboretum trip we did last year. Beautiful place, great cafe for lunch and really interesting stuff at the plant sale. Count me in again for May 12. Unfortunately, I may have a conflict for the April 28th trip. Will know soon.

I'd love to go on the Bayard Cutting trip. I live in Manhattan. How would I get there? Where is your group located & what's the name of it? (sorry I don't have the info. Been away from GW for a year). TIA

Hey all! Glad to see that folks are still reading this board, it has been waaay too quiet here.

Jan- given the choice, I would rather be in Calif or Hawaii! Please be sure to take lots of picts that you can share with us and have a great trip! We may have to plan a luncheon just so you can tell us all about it!

Barbara & Terrie – Glad to have you aboard. I expect this will be a great trip. Perhaps those who have been there before can guide us to the highlights.

Dutchess, nice to meet you. We are a small group that met though this board and we try to meet informally to share our interest in the various aspects of gardening. The group is diversified in demographic (age, background, life experiences) we have different gardening interests (container, vegetable, ornamental, city and suburban settings) and different skill levels-but all are casual, amateur gardeners.

For those traveling by train- there is a rail station just west of the gardens called the Great River Station- it is on the most southern LIRR line. If you Google "great river train station" it comes up.

So how about the Brooklyn Botanical Trip-- Anybody?

This sounds fun!
Unfortunately, Sakura Matsui day is too crowded at BBG. I'm planning on going the weekend before.
I would like to check out the other trip. Could any info. be e-mailed to me?

thanks,

Hi Miriam and welcome aboard!

When we planned the trip to the Brooklyn Botanical, I saw that there is a program the weekend before for the cherry bloom blooming, but it was primarily for the gardens. I thought the other events may be worthwhile, something different.

I will send you an email as soon as I can. We hope to see you there.

RE: First day trips are scheduled- come with us!

Good morning folks;
I just wanted to drop you all a line to remind you of our upcoming trip to the Bayard Cutting Arboretum scheduled for Saturday, May 12th. The plan is to meet at the Great river Train station around 10:30/10:45am. (we are expecting 1 person by train from NYC) then proceed by carpool to the arboretum (since the entry fee is by the car load). There is a café on the grounds, which I hear is quite lovely, that we can have lunch at. The garden opens at 10 am. I have been reminded that the plant sale is located a bit of a distance from the parking area, but last year there were golf carts available to assist in bringing your purchases back to you car.

If you have any change of plans, please email or call someone. Our head count as of today is 6. Unfortunately Cecelia had to cancel. (Dutchess of Blackpool)
