Hicks has lots of Roses!

| Well, went to Hicks today because I figgure I will get some impatients and get started planting but noticed they have lots of roses. They had the largest selection of the J&P boxed roses that I have ever seen, plus they had Weeks potted roses in those peat pots.
On sale. Of course I couldn't leave it be, I had to buy some. I bought Hot Cocoa, which I still have never seen in bloom, Playboy, Outrageous, Heaven on Earth and Tuscan Sun. All Floribundas. Everything but the Hot Cocoa is going in a bed together so I think those colors go. Should be rather eye catching when they all bloom. |

I forgot, I also got Golden Celebration David Austin Rose that I had been wanting since last year. I don't know how I possibly could have forgotten a rose as lovely as Golden Celebration!

HI Rita. Wow, your rose collection is really getting big. How many roses do you have now??? I wanted Golden Celebration last year, but The rose farm didn't have it so I got Graham Thomas in it's place. Your yard is going to look beautiful when the roses bloom. p.s. Where is a good place to get a blueberry bush, and what type is best? And do they need full sun?How many years will it be before they produce fruit?

Hi Maureen! You can get Blueberry Shrubs at the Rose Farm where we got David Austin Roses last year, I saw lots of pots sitting around while on my three trips there so far this spring. But the best if you only want one blueberry shrub would be to get a type called O'Neal Southern Highbush, which I bought at Agway. I mail order my bluebery shrubs because its not cost effective to buy locally unless you want only one or two. In fact my mail order fruit shrubs from Nourse Farms just came yesterday and today I am planting them. Planted 2 Red Gooseberries, am in the muddle of planting 12 Bluberries and have two red currants also to plant with that order. Back to roses, I have already bought 40 roses so far this spring and that does NOT count my Ashdown mail order. I had to have a Darlow's Enigma! My only new Austins are the Golden Celebration bought the other day and also The Prince, which I found at the rose farm on my last trip there on Tuesday. I did also now have four Rugosas all new to me. PLus I have bought many HTs, which I really didn't have last year. Then I also love Florabundas so there are lots of them new. And some once bloomers and an old rose, Comte de Chambord, not sure what that is. If you are checking the rose forums, you can see what I have been up to rose wise! I love the way my yard is starting to look after years of garden renovations to make it look like a garden in the country. But I think the roses are going to give it that extra pizazz that I wanted to add. Still, as in all projects, after starting in 2001 there is STILL a long way to go. I very much like the cottage garden look and have things all hodge-podgey and mixed up. I put in a new rose garden in my front yard facing the street where there was nothing growing last year. Back row is mixed shrubs with Nanking cherries, Chery Laurel and a dwarf cherry tree. In front of them I put Oklahoma and Crimson Glory red HTs and my Rosa Mundi off to the side. In front of them are three Sunsprite Florabundas and a Playboy Florabunda. I put Hardy LiLies in between the roses. It should look wonderful when they bloom. In the regular part of my yard, near the Austins from last year, I planted New HTs and put fragrant and hardy lilies between them all. Put a row of four Black Cherry Florabundas in from of my Austins from last year, lilies in between. Late spring and early summer should be glorious!

Good timing for me getting everything planted. The rain will settle everything thing in nicely. I still have roses to plant but at least now I have all the new HTs planted. My new Golden Celebration Austin is planted, I got that and my last HT planted after all the berry shrubs yesterday. Got The Prince planted too the day before. I have my Rugosas Potted up to live in pots forever as I don't want them taking over my yard. I figgure they will be ok. The pots are pretty large, we will see how they do. I got two rugosas in the J&P Milk cartons at Hicks that I had never heard of, a white called Wild Spice and a pinkish lavender called Wildberry Breeze. Can't wait to see them flower. What new roses did you get this spring?

Good morning Rita. Wow, you have been busy buying and planting roses. I also got Compte de Chambord this year. I wanted very fragrant roses, and was looking into Gertrude Jeckyl (spelling??) but got several people that told me that Compte de Chambord is just as fragrant and a better rose bush, so I got it. I only bought a few roses this year. I'm trying to control my spending so only got: Compte de chambord Pretty Jessica Rosa Centifolia That's it - can you believe it? But...I may order Peace from Roses Unlimited. I'm waiting to see if few cuttings I tried to root in the fall have taken. (A friend gave me cuttings of a 50+ year old plant). If they root, I won't buy it, if they didn't root I know what I want for my birthday :-) Roses Unlimited has an awesome mother plant which was from the owners family back 40+ years ago. Many of the peace roses for sale today are "over propagated" but the specimen they use is supposed to be great. Your yard must look beautiful. I love the cottage garden look, my yard is a mix of this and that. I put all types of plants and colors together. I also planted lots of lilys in the fall and have more to plant now. I love the orientals and the turks cap types. We started a garden group from this forum, maybe you could meet with us at some of our get togethers? Hope all is well Maureen

NYRita, I think Compte de Chambord is a Portland rose. Where is the Rose Farm located? I'm looking for a Prince or William Shakesphere 2000.

Its usually called Brookville Nursery. It is right down the road from Marten Viette Nursery, on the same side of the street. Brookville Nursery also known as the Rose Farm 5300 Northern Blvd Brookville, NY 516-626-0018 Martin Viette Nursery 6050 Northern Blvd East Norwich, NY 11732 516-922-5530 Make SURE you bring cash to the rose farm. They DO NOT take credit cards.

Well, Hicks roses were marked down even more so I got another Sunsprite to go with the three I have, and another HT plus another old garden rose called Rose de Rescht.

Almost all the J&P Milk Carton and weeks peat potted roses are now gone. Afew sorry looking ones moved off to the side on a rolling rack. You would think they would mark them down more but no way. There potted roses have come in and all the tables are full again of roses almost ready to bloom. One will pay for the quick bloom as they are $30.00 each. No romanticas though. I looked as I am looking for Rouge Royal. Managed to pick up Romanticas in bloom 2 Peter Mayles and one Michaelangelo (yellow old rose form) at the Rose Farm the other day. Also got two blooming florabundas called Charges Aznavour there. Those are just the MOST beautiful things!

This year the Milk Carton Rose selection at Hicks was not as good. I would say they had less than half of what they had prior years. Still I managed to buy six roses almost two weeks ago there. Got Another CAREFREE DELIGHT (I already had one), DISNEYLAND, FRANKLY SCARLETT, LOVERS LANE, BLACK MAGIC (my second, I have one already) and HONEY BOUQUET. Most are planted and I should get the very last one done this weekend.
