Evergreen combinations for front foundation

Posted by aspiring (My Page) on

garden. It is shaded too. Last year some of you will remember I hacked the overgrown meatballs yews and did perennials.

Well... there was nothing for winter interest after the perennials were dried up and gone. In driving around I love some of the evergreen combos I have seen that look really good all winter.

blues, yellows, greens, reds etc.

How do I decide on the right combination for my shady front?

any suggestions how I go about this.
Thanks.

RE: Evergreen combinations for front foundation

Hey Terrie- How is it going?

I am still learning alot about shrubs, conifers and evergreens. First you are going to need to locate plants that will grow in shade, figure out the different colors and textures (texture is formed by type of leaf) and form (overall shape). Dont forget mature size.

Usually what I do when I am working through something like this, I go to the nursery and see what they have. Pick up the plants and group them together to see what appeals to me. You can also ask the nursery staff what they would recommend for the conditions (soil type and amount of sun).

I hope this helps. I dont have any shrubs in front of my house, it is all perennials and bulbs. This year we are going to dig out the beds so that I can fit some foundation plants in the back row.
