Help! Suggestions, plants needed for huge, empty, rented yard

hi all - i moved in November to an apartment with a 22x50 back garden that consists mostly of patchy lawn, with an ugly chain link fence along one side and a few decent things (hydrangeas, lovely dogwood tree in one corner) but basically an empty perimeter. I rented the place for the garden, but now that spring is here i'm feeling quite desperate about how to approach creating something attractive out there when it's so bare, 1/4 of my lease is already gone, and i don't want to invest huge sums. I put a few end-of-season sale plants in last fall (spirea) and things dug up from my previous yard (hostas, catmint) and threw in some bulbs as well, and i'm thinking containers, annuals for the most part - but i am also begging divisions and unwanted plants where possible. i'd be most appreciative if anyone can suggest strategies for thinking about this situation - and also opportunities for acquiring free or low-cost plants and possibly edging materials.
many, many thanks

| I rent also and last year I went with lots of annuals, mainly impatiens. This year I bought lots of Canna bulbs(that I can dig up after the season, this way when you move you can bring them with you). Containers are a good way to go too. When we buy for our yard we make sure that its things you can take with you when you leave, we even have fountains. Try stores like Home Depot, if there is a Walmart near you with a garden center the prices a great there. Look for sales at local nurseries. |

| How much sun do you get, Cara? Are you looking for flowers/foliage/edibles/anything? |
