Does anyone have fruit trees? I am considering a semi-dwarf / dwarf apple for my backyard to shade my 15'x 12' patio. I'm hoping for a nice canopy, flowers and of course apples. Comments?

The heirloom variety Newtown Pippin is the only apple that is native to New York City!

Is there a particular reason that an apple tree would have to be 'city tolerant?' Thanks! |

I've seen apple trees here in b'stone bklyn. Also a friend grows peach trees in containers in her manhattan roof garden. The apple tree's ability to produce apples will depend on if it gets enough sun. Since you want it to provide shade over your patio, I imagine it will be fine. A dwarf would be best, otherwise it gets very big. City tolerant? Our gardens are pretty protected on all sides and apple trees are pretty sturdy. It will live. The question is, how well it will bear fruit.

I've decided to finally go with a sour cherry, semi-dwarf (12-15' tall) with fruit with red juice and flesh, called Surefire. It's a relatively new introduction. I was also considering Northstar (dwarf 10-12') and Meteor (semi-dwarf) cherry trees. All sour. They're quite disease resistant and don't require spraying compared to other fruit trees.
