Too early to plant cannas, caladiums, elephant ears?

| hi,
is it too soon to plant cannas, caladiums and elephant ears in containers?
i wouldn't want to jump the gun and have them not come up -- on the other hand, i don't want the bulbs (which i bought months ago!) to rot sitting on my kitchen counter!
thanks

You could start them indoors in containers and then move them outside around the begining of March. Just don't put them outside in full sun right off. The caladiums will do better in shade, the EE can take more sun than the caladiums and the canna's will do best in full sun, after gradually acclimating them to outside. Alberta |

| hi, thanks for the reply Alberta - i presume you mean the beginning of MAY, not March. In which case i guess I'll just wait a couple of weeks. What about clematis?? is it OK to plant them now? i just opened the bag (from Lowes, i think; i've had it two months) and they're bare root plants and they look dry - uh oh.... |

Hi Cara I just came back here and read my reply above, sorry bout that, yes I did mean May. LOL. The clematis you can plant now, give it a good drink when you plant it, Cleamatis like water. Boy I must have really been in a fog when I typed March, sorry again. :) Alberta |

| It might still be too cold for Caladiums. June 1 is the date that I read for our zone. |

| Canna, EE can be planted out in cooler weather as long as they were started indoors, otherwise the tubers/ rhizomes will not start growing until soil temps avg about 55-60F. Caladium tubers will definitely rot if the soil is less than about 60-65F, but a caladium plant already growing will tolerate colder temps. |
