Disease Affecting Metro NY Rhododendrons?

Hello all,

My formerly healthy rhododendrons are turning brown and appear to be sick. One already died.

Is there a disease around metro NY affecting rhododendrons?

I have noticed a LOT of my client's Rhodies seem to have died over the winter. I assumed it was winter kill. Seems to have effected Laurels and a lot of Ilex crenata as well.

I'm in Brooklyn, and I've never had any luck with evergreen rhododendrons or laurels. After a couple of years they'd turn black and die. When I put in a couple of deciduous rhodies, they were fine. They're the "Lights" type -- one gold and fragrant, the other white hasn't flowered yet but should be fragrant too.
