Bronxite in need of ideas...

Posted in the container garden post, but not sure if I will get any help (fingers crossed)

Hi all. I am from the Bronx and have been gardening for about 7 years. Nothing serious really just tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, beans, broccoli and herbs and sometime a few extras. I am seeing that people are using containers for lack of space or nutrient enriched soil. My soil seems to not doing very well the last few years, and since we haven't checked the ph (we havent really done anything but add compost, the occassional fertilizer and so forth)and it wasn't doing very well last year, I am considering containers and self watering. Can someone point me in the right direction of a link to how to create container gardens for corn, tomatoes, peppers and cukes? And maybe any other tips for the NYC area zones. My soil has never been very responsive to anything really (compost, fertilizer etc.) The area we use once had a Peach tree and there seems to be filled with remnants of tar and I have just discovered that I boulder the size of a tractor trailer tire has lifted and taken up half of my usual planting area. I dont have the money or resources to demo the giant rock and remove the remains, so I was thinking for this season I can try something different and see if I get better results. The weather he is very unpredictable, last year we had TOO much rain and hardly an sun, which caused poor conditions for all gardens in the area in which I live. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

RE: Bronxite in need of ideas...

are you in full all day sun there.. from the sound of our malaze.. it sounds like you are shaded alot
i've been making foam planters..out of the 1 1/2" builders foam from homedpot and lowes.. but my old greenwood containers always worked good.. except for over wintering.. they heat up too much in late winter.. while it still freezes.. the container soil ill heat up faster in the spring.. and give you an earlier start on things..
