A Tree for Manhattan

Hi I have a shady area (w/ little filtered sun) on the south side of the street (in Manhattan). Is there a flowering tree, that won't grow too tall, little maintenance, that can thrive in the shade? The area to be planted is @ 5x8 in front of a townhouse. Or perhaps an evergreen is more appropriate?? I appreciate any suggestions.

It depends . . .

shady, meaning blocked by buildings, or shady from overhead trees?

You want something in a tree shape, rather than a shrub standby like a rhododendron or azalea?

Do you want it to be flowering, or just looking for a nice foliage plant that's not a japanese maple -- or maybe a japanese maple is perfect for you?

Give us a little more detail on the light, and what you want from your tree, and we'll shower you with suggestions!

Jim

The area is blocked by buildings to the left and right. In front, there are sidewalk trees that filter the sun. Basically, it's total shade. I'd like a treet shape. Something unique, yet easy to care for. Flowering trees are nice. Someone suggested a japanese maple, but I was looking for something my eye-catching.
