Where to Buy and Plant Tomatoes

Hello everyone. Can anyone give me an idea as to when to plant tomatoes? I live is Nassau Co. I would think to buy the plants at a local nursery, but I notice that Home Depot has quite a spread this year. Is it too early to plant them? Should I go with the small plants or buy the larger ones? Thanks for the help.

typically, gardeners plant tomatoes too early! the plants are not happy unless the night time temps are warm. I would wait until the end of May to move plant outdoors, BUT, I am in eastern Suffolk. There is good info at the following:

Here is a link that might be useful: growing tomatoes on LI

Tomatoes don't like the cold - I like to wait until May 15th to plant them out- you don't gain anything by doing it earlier. Atlantic Nursery in Freeport has a tomato fest every year the weekend after mother's day- I think it's may 14-15 this year - when they bring in all the heirloom tomatoes. Every year they bring in a core group and some new selections to try. Quantities are limited so if you want something specific you should get there sat or sun.

I always like to use Memorial day as a starting point for planting vegetables especially Tomatoes, by then it should be warm enough.
Hope this helps

PS: that goes for most annuals, especially impatients.
